The laws vary from state to state on what you would have to do. You may need to register as a non-profit corporation both with the Internal Revenue Service as well as your state government (specifically, the Secretary of State or a similar division that governs corporations) in order to even have the legal ability to collect money. Some states, though, may allow you as an individual to solicit donations to remit to another charity -- it's best to see what the laws are in your state first, before you solicit donations.

Additionally, stores like Wal-Mart have policies that require persons to obtain permission to solicit donations in their stores, so you'll also have to ask those stores whether you're even allowed to ask for money there.
Reply:Do a search for cancer organizations, find one you want to be affiliated with and contact them about their fundraising policies.

Starting your own non-profit organization is expensive, if you do that your first visit should be to an attorney followed by a CPA both who specialize in non-profits.

Good luck
Reply:Besides the other good answers I would suggest that you approach independently owned stores. They are more likely to let you put up a bin than big stores like Walmart.
Reply:contact the management at your local stores and they will direct u to the person u need to talk to if it is not them
