How can I find a plan that has been used for an existing cancer research and treatment center. Strategic Plan.

Also I would like to find a health care planning consultant who specializes in Cancer Treatment and Research center planning and implementation. And versed in NGO/OFAC and middle east laws.

Why do we spend so much more money on breast cancer research than other forms?

I just read several articles about cancer deaths and found that far more men die of prostate cancer than women die of breast cancer. Also, men are much more likely to get this cancer than women get breast cancer.

Everywhere we look (on TV, radio, bumper stickers) we see pink.

Even with all the hubbub about tobacco causing deaths, we don't spend nearly as much money on lung cancer research etc.

Why is there such a disparity?

Why do we spend so much more money on breast cancer research than other forms?
All cancer deserves equal funding. It is an absolute horror no matter what age, stage or grade or type of cancer you have. A horror. I cannot in good conscience try to pick out one cancer that should receive more attention and more funding than another, including breast cancer. I am glad that they have the support and organization to lead the fight against their cancer.

On the other hand, I have a child with a rare cancer. There is always a sinking feeling in my gut because children and young people with his disease are dying. Pretty much all of them . . and it is a rotten, rotten cancer that robs these young people of life. Their bellies fill up with multiple huge tumors that become so heavy they can no longer stand up. I cannot even convey how misearable this disease is. It is so difficult when the little ones, the five to ten year old children have this cancer. I know that there are other diseases out there that deserve funding and research, but my heart aches for the young people suffering from abdominal sarcoma. There are no pink ribbons for them. There are no advocates for them. They are invisible in our society. They die slowly and painfully and out of the way so that no one notices. And, it's nobody's fault.

But, back to the question, the reason for the disparity is simply . . large numbers of people, survivors, and a good solid organization dedicated to education and advocating for funds to stop breast cancer. Rare cancers do not have the organization because they don't have the numbers of people needed for a campaign and truthfully, few survivors are left to advocate for their disease.

And, although the medical community is intrigued by this rare cancer, currently funding is limited for cancers that could save so few people, and there is no active research taking place. People with rare cancer at the moment . . are expendable. They are the part of the statistics rattled off casually.

But what can you do? There is little we can do about it. So, we just do the best that we can and always stay focused and hopeful. And, yeah, we support research for all cancer.

Maybe someday I'll have the energy to do more. But, for now, I do what I can by doing research and have created a patient database searching for treatments that may benefit them all.
Reply:Because we're closer to finding a cure to breast cancer than we are to a lot of other cancers.
Reply:yeah, I don't really feel sorry for a smoker with lung cancer. And what can I say, men love the (.)(.)s. Maybe that is why we spend so much more on breast cancer research.

Seriously, fewer women die of breast cancer BECAUSE we have put forth so much effort in fighting it, not the other way around. Perhaps we should up the research we do on prostate cancer as well.

Send me a brown ribbon......
Reply:Please advise where you have read such articles. Also, brown ribbons are already available and several parties already display them. I would suggest checking out the National Cancer Institues website to get a better grasp on what the statistics show regarding these two cancers. I am not sure if you are aware, but breast cancer can effect women at a very young age. Girls as young as 13 years old have been known to have this terrible diease. Also, if you check out the staticstics on the National Cancer institutes website you will find that 80% of the men who are diagnoised with Prostate cancer are over the age of 65. Also, check the American Cancer Society statictic and compare. Here is the info I found, and I would consider them a viable source of information:

212,920 women will be diagnoised with breast cancer this year, 40,970 will die.

234,460 men will be diagnoised with prostate cancer this year, and 27350 will die.

Note that the diagnoises rate for breast cancer does not include the men that will also be diagnoised.

So if you go by these numbers more women will die this year of breast cancer then men dying of protate cancer.

I guess what I am trying to say is that both dieases are terrible. I doubt you will find anyone that would argue that. All cancer is terrible. But if you want reliable numbers, check reliable sources. The National Cancer Insitute has access to SEER which really has more statistics then either you or I would ever need, however, if you are a numbers person like me, you will love it.

One other item to think of is that there are organizations that have dumped millions if not billions of $$ into education about breast cancer such as the Komen Foundation. Yes, the use of the pink ribbon can be overwhelming, not to mention if a company gives a whopping 1% of their profit to research.

Also, I am sure that in one way or another you are being affected by prostate cancer and my thoughts are with you. Best of luck on getting that brown ribbon out there! :)
Reply:While all cancer is obviously a terrible thing, most people don't realize how "ordinary" it is: about 1 in four of us will develop some form of cancer in our lifetime. Prostate cancer generally strikes older men, and though sometimes very serious, the men who have it often die of something else age-related first. Breast cancer strikes women of all ages.

Breast cancer has also become one of the more "manageable" cancers over the last few years. I know this sounds like a cold, hard choice, but who would you rather save, if you had to choose; a 25-year-old mother of two babies, or a 74-year-old grandfather who has lived a rich, full life?

Lung cancer from tobacco products is a lifestyle choice! *

(Yes, I know that not all lung cancer is a consequence of tobacco use, but an awful lot of it is. )
Reply:Breast cancer is a very "popular" cancer, and it receives a lot of public attention because it can destroy one of the most visibly "important" parts of a woman's body.
Reply:I dont know. But dont I think a difference in publicity in this case means a difference in research funds. Not all the money in research comes from such campains. If you look at the actual funds, even for academic research, most of it (the biggest amounts, which are actually an investment) comes from pharmas. If there are a lot of people suffering from it, pharmas will definetely invest. The more people, the more money they get. Remember, those companies are in stock markets, in which retirement funds are invested...

You wouldn't like them to make bad investments, would you ?
Reply:I'M REALLY NOT SURE, BUT THE WAY I SEE IT IS..IF YOU GET CANCER FROM TOBACCO IT WAS A CHOICE.BECAUSE YOU HAVE THE CHOICE OF SMOKING OR NOT! BUT YOU DON'T CHOOSE BREAST CANCER

How much should prostate cancer research be getting as compared to breast cancer research?

Recent studies show that the death rates from Prostate Cancer are much higher than previsously thought, higher than even Breast Cancer rates. Even previosuly, there was only a 1% difference in the death rates. Do you know how government research money is provided for Breast Cancer as compared to what is provided for Prostate Cancer?

How much should prostate cancer research be getting as compared to breast cancer research?
I'm not sure how the funds are divided, but the rates of death could be directly related to the fact, that women are now going to the doctors specifically for breast exams and mammograms catching cancer earlier. Maybe the men are not as vigilant. Also, you might take into consideration that women are involved in A LOT of private breast cancer research fundraisers and charities, so therefore, breast cancer research may be making greater strides with the private donations.
Reply:That's thanks to the power of lobby groups.

And this is why I think breast cancer activists are misandrist.
Reply:they should be of equal importance...both are deadly forms of cancer that have a greater death rate across all cancers...It's a bloody disgrace that one has preferential treatment over the other...
Reply:The disparity in funding is due, not to less government funding for prostate cancer, but the private funds raised for breast cancer by survivors like myself, people who simply have a friend or family member who has had breast cancer and corporate sponsorship of the cause with portions of sales of certain products being earmarked for breast cancer research. We get out there and pound the pavement and raise the funds and patronize companies that support the cause.

The difference in death rates is not due to lack of testing on the part of men or the PSAs accuracy, but men who receive a diagnosis and don't follow treatment protocols if they seek treatment at all. They're more worried about losing their "masculinity" than their lives.

I am not defined by the state of my breasts. My only concern is that they be healthy. As part of my treatment to suppress hormone production due to an estrogen/progesterone positive tumor I opted to have my ovaries removed rather than take pills to accomplish it. Does that make me less of a woman? Of course NOT!

If you're concerned about these inequities go out and raise money and awareness!
Reply:none !!!. come on its been know by some of the best doctors. all these diseases are treatable

check it out for your self
Reply:I'm not sure about the studies but, do believe they should be equal as far as research go. Actually any kind of cancer should be studied more, you would think if we can put a man on the moon and spend all this money helping other counties fight wars, we could find a cure for cancer.

How Do You Feel About Little Money Being Spent on Prostate Cancer Research?

Breast cancer research receives 50 times the amount of money that prostate cancer research receives.

40,000 women die per year because of breast cancer. Yet, 27,000 men die from prostate cancer.

Supposedly, dads, sons, and husbands are important to women.

How do you feel about the way-out-of-proportion amount of money that breast cancer resereach receives even though your dads and sons are just as much at risk of dying from prostate cancer?

Do you give money to breast cancer research while giving little to prostate cancer?

How Do You Feel About Little Money Being Spent on Prostate Cancer Research?
Early testing is the key to prostate cancer.

It's that simple.

Prostate cancer is highly treatable in its early stages.

This goes for testicular cancer as well.

This isn't so with breast cancer.

However, heart disease is still the #1 killer!

tc
Reply:seeing as i am a woman i think that it should be equal. woman and men are equal and prostate cancer is on the rise.
Reply:I lost my Mother to ovarian cancer, yet I almost never hear a word about it anywhere. The blood test for prostate is covered by insurance, but the blood test for ovarian cancer is not. How is THAT fair?
Reply:I didn't realize there was such a big difference, wow. I never see affiliations collecting for prostate cancer research. So...next question is, what do we do about it?

Why do people think there is a big conspiracy in cancer research ?

Why indeed ? How big would it have to be, you think ? All researchers and their graduate students ? Why not include their families too ?

How much money do you think a scientist makes in cancer research ? Much less than a BSc in computer engeneering, that I know !

Why do I suddenly feel stupid working in this field and want to quit for computer science ?

Why do people think there is a big conspiracy in cancer research ?
Perhaps its the purple mohawk that does it.
Reply:I'm a graduate school student working for a Ph.D in the country's top two (it switches from #1 or #2 here and there) cancer center.

I never heard of a conspiracy but believe me, us students do NOT get paid alot (~$23,000 for us plus health care, dental, and tuition). The professors that start here probably don't make past $65,000 a year....there is not money in this unless you establish a good reputation and make lots of publications or work for industry.

With that said, I believe the computer science fad has saturated the field with many college students that have a BS in computer science. This drives the starting salary and demand for them down.

My advice to you is that you should look and see what you WANT to do. The career path should be something you ENJOY doing --and should feel like you're being paid for doing a hobby.

Good luck!
Reply:I suggest you switch to bio-informatics then - it would be a great transitional job and you could use your biology training. Also, there is a strong future for this kind of work.

People think there is a big conspiracy in cancer research because they are ignorant. People think there are all kinds of conspiracies. Some people are just paranoid, period.
Reply:As Hiscinder says, its the pharmacuetical companies that make the bucks, not the researchers. If you did a study of the persecution of the doctors and others who have found ways of fighting cancer, it wouldn't take long to get the picture. The pharmacuetical companies have "bought" the colleges, TV, newspapers, medical journals, non-profit organizations, and indirectly and directly, doctors - with their tremendous money for research (jobs), ads, etc. They are a VERY GOOD CUSTOMER of TV, magazines, newspapers, colleges, etc. We all know how very good customers are treated. They influence what is taught, what is studied and even the results and what gets disseminated. There is deception, they use ridicule, many ways to hide the truth from the public. They call early detection prevention - ha - think...is early detection prevention? When was the last time you were told what to eat and what to avoid to prevent cancer? No, it is not ignorance to believe in a conspiracy, it is ignorance NOT to.
Reply:My husbands ex wife found a compound that killed the cell's of some form of cancer overnight. She turned in her findings and you know what happened......NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ok......people are still suffering from it.

She does make a considerable income in research, it is not the researcher that has any gain. Look at the pharmaceutical companies, what if the ins. companies suddenly had to start paying for patients to get better. It already take an act of God to even get an ins. company to admit you have anything that requires more than an antibiotic.
Reply:Mostly it is just a misinformed backlash at the lack of progress.

I do believe that if an actual cure is ever found that the doctor responsible will suddenly turn up missing along with his/her work.
Reply:Sorry to hear that you feel that you are not appreciated and should change jobs. I think that it is disgusting that movie stars make millions per movie and people that really make a difference to lives (scientists, social workers, etc) are paid so poorly.

My mum has cancer, I really appreciate all the hours that are put in to finding a cure.

How can it be possible to collect millions of dollars in fund raising every year for cancer research?

And still have the highest cancer statistics every year. What I mean is that the research is costing millions of dollars and the cost of medicines are on the rise every year and the nation gets sicker and sicker. What's going on ?

How can it be possible to collect millions of dollars in fund raising every year for cancer research?
Where did you get your information? What do you mean by "the highest cancer statistics every year"? And "the nation gets sicker and sicker"? Please look at this these:

http://progressreport.cancer.gov/trends-...

http://progressreport.cancer.gov/highlig...

The best site for cancer information is here.

http://www.cancer.gov/

What's going on is that the American health care system--if you can call it a "system"--is dysfunctional. Many other countries (most of the industrialized world) have better health statistics, such as life expectancy, than the US, and spend far less money achieving it.

If you want to do something, write to your representatives in Congress.
Reply:Actually, billions are spent every year on cancer research just here in the USA. Many industrialized countries also have large cancer research budgets.

Realize, cancer is not one disease. It is a description for many diseases with a common symptom: uncontrolled cell growth.

Cancer caused by multiple gene mutations. There is no current technology to fix any genetic disease.

To give you an idea as to the complexity and cost, look at the just mapping the human genome. I believe it took over 10 years and many billions of dollars. That's just to sequence the genes. That does not even begin to figure out what each gene function(s) are.

The investment has produced many new and effective treatments. Some of them like Gleevec, Sprycel and, Tasigna have given most CML patients indefinite remissions with mostly mild side effects.
Reply:"the nation gets sicker and sicker" ... I think you're another victim of mainstream media news. Their job is not to tell the truth, their job is to make things seem exciting and fantastic and scary, so that you'll tune in more, or read more, or listen more. That's their "bias."

It's as true as it ever was: DON'T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU SEE IN THE NEWS.
Reply:Cancer is over 200 types and subtypes of disease with four stages of each cancer. None of the cancers respond in the same manner to treatment. You cannot use the research for breast cancer to treat bone cancer. Each cancer needs its own research, its own protocol, its own chemotherapy. Which means it needs its own funding, its own research facility, its own Clinical Trial, its own researcher or oncologist experts, and patients willing and well enough to undergo research and trials.

There have been enormous strides made. You just are not aware of it because you are not involved in the Cancer world. The biggest problem at the moment is metastatic cancer . . which is advanced cancer that has spread from the original site. There are few treatment options available for this type of late cancer and there are even fewer options for the 'orphan' or 'rare cancers' that no one has ever heard about. Most research funding goes towards the more common cancers such as breast, lung, and colon cancer. The expensive drugs are caused from trying to spread the cost equally across all cancer types . . to fund the cancer research for rare cancers.

Actually cancer in the US has not been rising, it has been going down. The results of years of research means that there are more and more survivors of cancer. All cancer types, stages, and grades of tumor now have survivors where as just a few years ago they did not.

At the moment there is treatment for cancer that will lead to individual cures . . but there is no magic bullet that will cure all cancer types.

I want to raise money for breast cancer research?

Is there any way I can organize a "Walk" for breast cancer research? Particpants would get people to sponsor them and all the money would go to B.C.research. Does anyone know how to get something like this started?

I want to raise money for breast cancer research?
contact the national b/c site and inform them of your intentions and ask for direction in getting plugged into their fund raising department. I know that by just going to their site and clicking on the pink ribbon gets you to view their sponsors page which in turn sends $$ to them. Worth the visit eh? Good Luck.
Reply:Relay For Life my Aunt is the Head Chairperson of her group. You could ask one of the local highschools to support you and let you hold an event at their track and send emails and letters out to people you know and have them invite people. Then have people set up activities althrough the event. Have people sell things like little stations when people are walking around the track. Trust me it works.

Good Luck

Where can I find a message board for cancer research professionals?

My husband is a scientist and was actively involved in cancer research for many years at a hospital and a medical school. He would like to find message boards or other forums that are used by his peers so that he can engage in discussions of what is going on now in his field.. Is there anyone who can please give me the links to these message boards? Thank you!

Where can I find a message board for cancer research professionals?
You might start with some of the bigger medical centres and the big Medical professional associations who have very elaborate websites.

Heres an example for neurosurgery:

Does anyone know where I can do triathlons do raise money for cancer research in the Bay Area, California?

How do I go about raising money for cancer research?

My idea is to raise one million dollars for cancer research, using both highly favored (celebrities) figures, and every state. Our country is so focused on helping everyone else, that I would like to help raise money for the cancer patients right here in the US. I would like to set out a majority of projects, but I do't know where to start? How do I even get started and get celebs and state governments involved?

How do I go about raising money for cancer research?
Get creative! For the products if you mean just t-shirts, hats, cups, mousepads, pins etc. just go to zazzle.com. You design they make the products.

Create a website or a myspace page explaining your cause. Set up a paypal account so people can donate money.

Go to the local children's hospital. Ask the kids to draw you a picture and put those pictures on cards, posters etc.

There's a million things you can do.

GOOD LUCK!

Feel free to e-mail me for more ideas.
Reply:I offer fundraisers for these types of things. I'm a Purse Party consultant and basically your group would take catalog orders and I will donate 20% of your total sales to your organization!
Reply:Go to www.give.org and see how many foundations are already out there to raise money. This site is excellent because each charity has to account for the amount of money that actually is spent on its focus rather than on administration and beaurocracy of it. It will give you some ideas. Also, you could go to an academic site like Sloan Kettering in New York or UCSF in San Francisco. The company Genentech might have ideas for you.
Reply:There is already a cure for cancer. Drugs, surgery, chemotherapy and radiation are definitely not. The key is to eat from the garden - the natural foods that God has given to us.

There are so many cancer research projects going on. If you really want to help, encourage people to eat God's natural foods.

Do you see animals with cancer? Not many. Why? Because they eat from God's garden. We are the only animals who cook our food.

My motto is: if the food has a mom or dad or a face, I will not eat it.

I wish you long life.
Reply:OoOo Make paper pumpkins and sell them with a picture of a child with cancer.. ect. sell them for a dollar each and hang the pumpkins with the person that bought the pumpkin's name on it around the hospital WHILE presenting the money to cancer research! that probably doesnt help much. but it might a little. Im only 14 and that is wat I do to help! I have raised up to about 900.00 dollars for st. Judes hospital in no time! :-) good luck!
Reply:hahaha i have the same idea. ive thought of starting up a foundation and develop chile's first national cancer registry as it may find trends, be a source for epidemiologists and all. nixon did that for u americans in the 70s when he declared war to cancer. i think by setting up a foundation makes it easier to raise money. if that escapes ur possibilities --it takes money, other peoples commitment and time, i think a good start might be becoming a volunteer on any cancer foundation like lance armstrongs. in the end, ull be accomplishing the same goal... helping fight cancer and eventually beating that **********. credits would go to lance, but then ud still be helping beat this crap the best way u can. if it was a person id kill cancer with my bear hands. but a concerted effort will give it a more painful death!! i wish u GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is there a group or web site where cancer researches and doctors discuss there cancer research.Compare ideas and theories about treating cancer and discussing methods of treating cancer

Is there a group on the internet where cancer researches and doctors talk about there research?
i'm afraid not (unfortunately), because the researchers need to publish their results and theories to get recognized, so they may not want to share insight before the publication. It's a shame especially in this country (USA).

Reply:The way to "share" research is to write up your stuff and send it in to various journals in the hope that you get published.

Or if you actually want to get into treating patients, contact a practice site and talk to them. Where are you from? Are you a practicing physician or a member of a medical team specializing in cancer? Are you focused on a specific type of cancer? Do research on the internet and find the other professionals who treat the same type of cancer and contact them. If you've got something worthwhile that makes new in roads, they would probably want to listen to you.
Reply:Yes, there are online groups. . but they are almost always password restricted and invitation only and meant for academics or those involved in serious cancer research.
Reply:You could always start a Yahoo Group for cancer researchers.

Don't expect too many actual researchers to show up there.

Their research is peer-reviewed and published in medical journals. They kick ideas off each other at the many annual conventions for oncology and related fields.

What is the best donation for cancer research?

My friend's brother has been diagnosed with cancer for the second time, I would like to donate as a Christmas present to the most honerable cancer research place.

What is the best donation for cancer research?
In my opinion the best organization is Cancer Research Institute. It is important to find a charity that puts the highest percentage of your donation toward programs instead of administrative costs.

You can find information on organizations to donate to at guidestar.org, give.org, and charitynavigator.org. I hope your friend's brother gets well...
Reply:Honestly? I think the best donation you can give is to your friend's brother. Insurance only covers so much - he will have a lot of financial responsibility to receive chemo and go through surgery. Otherwise, if you are looking to donate to a charity, anything that has to do with children since they are our future would be the most logical and have the largest impact (ie - children with luekemia).

Check out "Make a Wish Foundation."
