Why do people think there is a big conspiracy in cancer research ?

Why indeed ? How big would it have to be, you think ? All researchers and their graduate students ? Why not include their families too ?

How much money do you think a scientist makes in cancer research ? Much less than a BSc in computer engeneering, that I know !

Why do I suddenly feel stupid working in this field and want to quit for computer science ?

Why do people think there is a big conspiracy in cancer research ?
Perhaps its the purple mohawk that does it.
Reply:I'm a graduate school student working for a Ph.D in the country's top two (it switches from #1 or #2 here and there) cancer center.

I never heard of a conspiracy but believe me, us students do NOT get paid alot (~$23,000 for us plus health care, dental, and tuition). The professors that start here probably don't make past $65,000 a year....there is not money in this unless you establish a good reputation and make lots of publications or work for industry.

With that said, I believe the computer science fad has saturated the field with many college students that have a BS in computer science. This drives the starting salary and demand for them down.

My advice to you is that you should look and see what you WANT to do. The career path should be something you ENJOY doing --and should feel like you're being paid for doing a hobby.

Good luck!
Reply:I suggest you switch to bio-informatics then - it would be a great transitional job and you could use your biology training. Also, there is a strong future for this kind of work.

People think there is a big conspiracy in cancer research because they are ignorant. People think there are all kinds of conspiracies. Some people are just paranoid, period.
Reply:As Hiscinder says, its the pharmacuetical companies that make the bucks, not the researchers. If you did a study of the persecution of the doctors and others who have found ways of fighting cancer, it wouldn't take long to get the picture. The pharmacuetical companies have "bought" the colleges, TV, newspapers, medical journals, non-profit organizations, and indirectly and directly, doctors - with their tremendous money for research (jobs), ads, etc. They are a VERY GOOD CUSTOMER of TV, magazines, newspapers, colleges, etc. We all know how very good customers are treated. They influence what is taught, what is studied and even the results and what gets disseminated. There is deception, they use ridicule, many ways to hide the truth from the public. They call early detection prevention - ha - think...is early detection prevention? When was the last time you were told what to eat and what to avoid to prevent cancer? No, it is not ignorance to believe in a conspiracy, it is ignorance NOT to.
Reply:My husbands ex wife found a compound that killed the cell's of some form of cancer overnight. She turned in her findings and you know what happened......NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ok......people are still suffering from it.

She does make a considerable income in research, it is not the researcher that has any gain. Look at the pharmaceutical companies, what if the ins. companies suddenly had to start paying for patients to get better. It already take an act of God to even get an ins. company to admit you have anything that requires more than an antibiotic.
Reply:Mostly it is just a misinformed backlash at the lack of progress.

I do believe that if an actual cure is ever found that the doctor responsible will suddenly turn up missing along with his/her work.
Reply:Sorry to hear that you feel that you are not appreciated and should change jobs. I think that it is disgusting that movie stars make millions per movie and people that really make a difference to lives (scientists, social workers, etc) are paid so poorly.

My mum has cancer, I really appreciate all the hours that are put in to finding a cure.
