Why do we spend 97% more on AIDS research than Heart Disease and 84% more than cancer research when AIDS is ..

totally preventable through abstinence and not being an intravenous drug user?

Why do we spend 97% more on AIDS research than Heart Disease and 84% more than cancer research when AIDS is ..
The reason for such expenditures is because AIDS is a political disease. I say political because there is a strong lobby pushing for government money to spend on this disease. And like you pointed, preventable through abstinence and not doing the intravenous drugs.
Reply:This is an interesting question to me so, I'll try to leave partisanship out of my answer. AIDS is much less rampant than heart disease for certain. As for cancer, it depends which type you're referring to. Most cancers are fairly rare and AIDS is actually on the same level of prevalence as most individual cancers. Summed together though, cancer is much more prevalent than AIDS as you can see in the last column of the pdf in my source list.

I'll finish reply later.
Reply:Saying something like "Gay people run the world" really makes no sense, the balance is very clearly tilted in the other direction. Additionally, gay people are not the only ones with aids.

The reason we do research on aids is because we are not an abstinent nation. If we were, we'd be extinct. 97% more is not spent on aids than heart disease, I don't know where you're getting those figures.

If you want to talk about preventability, heart disease is severely reduced when red meats are reduced or cut out of one's diet.
Reply:Because finding a cure for AIDS will help so so many people. Everyone knows the cure for heart disease. Don't be fat! Stop eating at McDonald's and Taco Bell, get out and exercise. Also there are many many ways to help people with heart disease from bypass to medications.

There is NOTHING to help those who suffer with AIDS besides a few meds that don't cure the disease by any means.
Reply:Because AIDS is a repulsive disease that is ravaging the world.

And heart disease is preventable by eating a health diet and exercise.

And some cancer is preventable from not smoking.

If only the world were as simple as you suggest.
Reply:Heart disease can be largely prevented as well. Don't be fat, don't smoke, don't eat trans fats, exercise...all disease should be researched and prevented. I wonder how you feel about breast cancer research? I mean it mainly just effects women, right?
Reply:Not necessarily A nurse got it when she was doing her rounds and some people are born with it. But I agree more should be spent on cancer my friend who was 13 died of heart disease and cancer a few weeks ago it was so sad and it was just so unbelievable.
Reply:Because aids and other viruses have a DIRECT relationship with causing many cancers.

Why do you ask?

Hoping to drive some hostility towards sick people for a political advantage?
Reply:Because science has become politicized and reason and logic are no longer part of decisions about what types of research should be funded.
Reply:Because scientists are more interested in challenging the disease that has so far been uncurable.
Reply:Heart disease is preventable too.
Reply:it is the favorite illness of the lib elites......
Reply:YOU ARE LIVING IN A DREAM WORLD......
Reply:What is your source for your statistics?
Reply:Source? The dry cleaner called, your sheet's ready.
Reply:good question
Reply:Well, there are still people out there who contacted AIDS through blood transfusions before they started testing the blood. Then, you have two people in what one assumes is a commited relationship and the other cheats and gives the innocent party AIDS. Are you supposed to be celabate your whole life? You can control your actions but not your partners/spouses.

Also, heart disease, in some cases, can be controlled by medication, diet and exercise. People still choose to eat at McDonalds.

The research for AIDS has brought about new medication that can allow the patient to live many more years. How is that a bad thing?

EDIT: The irony of you calling us uneducated cracks me up. These days, contacting AIDS through transfusions pretty much doesn't happen. They test the blood now. HOWEVER....at the onset of the epidemic....that is one way it was spread. A lot of people contacted it that way. Should they be left to die because we won't do any research? How is that even humane? You assume that everyone caught it by using drugs or being loose. Seriously? There ARE other ways to get it. What about the children born infected (before ...wait for it...RESEARCH showed that if treated immediately, the baby can, in fact, NOT be HIV positive or have AIDS. That is one way AIDS research is a good thing. Lives saved.

I'm also aware that research for cancer and other diseases is NOT underfunded. They get money. I've never once read that research had to cease due to lack of funding. There is enough to go around. So why not let it?
Reply:Good question! People don't want to practice abstinance and keep using . You can't stop people. I think by stopping ways for them to get treatment will stop them from being irresponsible. I think by illegalizing abortion, people will practice more abstinence, because not everyone will want a back-alley abortion. You'd think people would just stop when they know the consequences, but they simply won't. It's quite ridiculous. Star for you!
Reply:it's called the lib left and their kooky feel good ideas...let's make the gays feel better about themsleves...aids isn't a gay problem anyone can get aids...duh what a stupid argument
Reply:Because gay people run the world.
