Stem cell research could absolutely help improve cancer treatments, and because a large portion of medical research is government funded, government funding of stem cell research is critical.

Believe it or not, cancer cells actually have quite a bit in common with stem cells. As you probably already know, stem cells are undifferentiated cells, meaning they aren't any particular type of tissue, they're just cells that can turn into specific types. They basically look like generic cells. Skin cells are flat, neurons are long and kind of tree-like, but stem cells are just kind of blob-like. They look something like the pictures of generic cells you might have seen in biology textbooks (the ones where the show all the organelles, and the cell is just kind of a generic blog with no specialized structures). They can also keep dividing indefinitely, unlikely differentiated cells that can only divide so many times before the cell line just dies. They also tend to divide more quickly than normal cells, particularly if the produce cells that are in constant demand (for example, stem cells in the bone marrow produce blood cells, which constantly need to be replaced, and stem cells in the hair follicles produce hair cells, and hair is always growing).

Cancer cells are normal somatic cells that have, in a sense, undifferentiated. A cancer cell might have started out as a skin cell, but by the time it's in something that would be considered a tumor, it's barely recognizable as a skin cell, and is more of a generic blob. It can also keep dividing indefinitely.

Because cancer cells are so similar to stem cells, cancer treatments tend to destroy stem cells along with cancer cells. The reason that a patient's hair typically falls out during chemo is that the chemicals used to kill the cancer cells also kill the stem cells in the hair follicles. More problematic are the stem cells in the bone marrow. Those ones produce both red and white blood cells, which are pretty darned important. Cancer patients will often develop anemia (from too few red blood cells), and weakened immune systems (from too few white blood cells) during chemo, and may even need a bone marrow transplant.

Improved understanding of the physiological differences between stem cells and cancer cells would allow researchers to design cancer treatments that don't attack cancer cells. Also, improved understanding of the mechanisms of differentiation might lead to a better understanding of exactly what goes wrong in cancer cells (since they basically differentiated in reverse), which might lead to the ability to reverse the damage to the cell that caused it to become cancerous in the first place.

Reply:i believe there is a cure for cancer. my wife has ovarian cancer that has spread to all of her major organs. the surgeon opened her up and closed her right back up. he said he would do more damage trying to remove it. he said try chemo and see if that will shrink it enough to remove it, but there is very little hope. so I've researched this ALOT and I've bought everything from b-17 (which i started taking and my sciatic nerve quit hurting and my blood pressure is more normal than it's ever been) to ozone generator and everything in between. my wife refuses to try them but I've bought them.

my mother (skin cancer) and my brother in law (hip,lymph,lung and brain) were all having surgery on the same day at the same time at different hospitals. my brother in law was having a hole drilled into his hip to scrape out the cancer and to put bone cement in so his hip wouldn't break. when they checked the cancer cells that had been removed they were all dead!! he was drinking this nasty tea that you make from a tree bark from south America. he isn't doing very good now. I'm sure it's spread too far. but back to my thoughts on a cure. HAS ANYONE EVER HEARD OF A HIGH RANKING PUBLIC OFFICIAL EVER DYING FROM CANCER? if you have please post it. it's like the deadly aids virus the last time i seen magic Johnson on TV he looked very healthy to me

Generally government dollars are not well spent unless there are refined projects that need acceleration..

Reply:Anything a Government can do towards finding a cure for all cancers is commendable and should be supported with vigor.

However i do not believe that a Government is capable of balancing the Country's treasury fairly and just.... I look around myself, and find all nations, warring with each other over trivial matters such as Gas/Oil which have nearly been depleted... Unwillingness to look after our environment, for the sake of economics.... One country is well on its way, to decide the course of everybody´s fate on this planet for the better part of a 100 years, now, and look where it brought them... trillions into debt, interfering in Nations politics on other continents, as if they have been ordered to do so by UN Council, which is as far from the truth as Santa Claus really existing.. I feel strongly that our food is the biggest problem with the rise in cancer. FD%26amp;C food colors are made out of petroleum, artificial flavors are usually derived from petroleum. BHT, BHA, TBHQ are petroleum based and one is actually used TO PROMOTE the GROWTH of TUMORS in lab animals. And we put this stuff in our food supply?! I don't care what the FDA says, these things were not meant to be consumed and processed by our bodies. Why do they say not to sniff gas fumes, but it's ok to eat things made from petroleum. It's a contradiction and it's killing us. We don't need bright blue food, or Red#40 added to our salmon so it looks more "natural".

Many of these things came onto market in the late 60's, early 70's and that is when the rise of many of our health problems started. Why do we have so many kids with ADD, ADHD, OCD, birth defects, cancer, etc? We have poisoned ourselves and most don't realize it!

Help us wage a war on the food industry while you are fighting for a cure. People with cancer really don't need BHT in their food to make their cancer grow.

Stem cell transplants (in lieu of bone marrow transplants) are used all the time (in the US, and Federally funded) to treat leukemias, lymphomas, and other auto immune disorders.

The cells either come from the peripheal blood stream of an adult, or the cord blood and placenta of a HEALTHY baby AFTER a HEALTHY birth. Baby nor mother are harmed in any way.

While they may be using embryonic for this transplant in research (I dont know), they are NOT using embryonic in actual transplants on humans.

While I dont know that anyone can actually officially say it is a cure, it shows promise that it could be.

I know several patients who have lived years in remission after transplant. I just went through transplant this summer. I am currently in remission, and it may be my only chance at long term remission, or 'cure'.

www.marrow.org has a lot of information about this type of transplant, the stems cells, and what diseases it can be used with. This is the National Marrow Donor's Program website.

I dont have links, but if you do a couple of google searches, you will find that embryonic stem cells are proving to be 'unstable'.

They are used for sure in research in the US, but I am not sure they are actually used in treatment. This research and treatment is NOT federally funded, but is legal.

Adult stem cells and babys cord blood and placenta is used in research and treatment every day, and IS federally funded (My transplant was paid for by your tax dollars - I have medicare)

I am not as well schooled on other types and uses, but improvements are being made day by day.

Reply:Stem cells can be used to cure many issues. Think of a stem cell as ultimately being a blank cell, one without the information of potential use of that cell being written into that cells "code" yet. Ultimately meaning, a stem cell can be used to create or heal organs by the devision and thus replication of the stem cells.

Yes and no. For example, some kinds of cancers that ONLY occur in rats have been found. It was widely believed that saccharin or cyclamates (I forget which one) caused cancer, but the fact was that rats digest, process and eliminate it differently than we do. When it is concentrated in their urine, it forms crystals, which it does not do in our urine because our urine contains a higher percentage of water. (A human with water levels in the urine as low as a rat's would already be dead of dehydration.)

The sharp-edge crystals in the rats' bladders repeatedly cut them and caused bleeding, required healing, and eventually led to a breakdown of the healing process, with uncontrolled cell growth and reproduction, called cancer-- because the bladders were continually being cut by the sharp-edged crystals and needing to be healed...! So it was not that the sweetener caused cancer. ANYTHING that crystallized in their urine like that would eventually have caused cancer.

The rats just couldn't tell us, that's all.

Stop medical experiments on mute animals-- experiment on PETA members, instead.

this is probly a joke question(?)but--having had many rats and mice over the years,i can tell u that EVERY-and i do mean 100% of them-rodent that i ever had,died of cancer in its old age.u could see the tumours,and they'd have to be put down.in the wild,they are predated by almost everything-owls,foxes,u name it.they dont live long enough to develop the disease.but 3 year old mice and 5 yr old rats are extraordinarily prone to cancer in my opinion.ive often wondered if those tests are skewed-i mean,was it the diet they were fed.or the chemicals they ingested in the lab-or,like my pets,was it just that rodents are cancer prone to begin with??????

There are so many organisations out there that a desparate for funds into legitimate and worthy causes like cancer research. Why do people and governments keep on pouring money into researching things with no benefit towards human or animal society

Research is kind of like a 100,000 (or more) piece puzzle. Without one piece, it's impossible to know where others go.

That shower curtain research, for example, could lead to more knowledge about the ways weather systems evolve in the atmosphere over tropical regions of Earth. Which could lead to more advanced hurricane prediction. Which could lead to better building codes. Which could lead to less damage following a major storm. Which could lead to less need for federal recovery assistance. Which could lead to more money for the federal education budget. Which could lead to lower tuition costs at universities. Which enables more kids to go to college and research shower curtain motion.

Well, as anything . . moderation is the key. No clinical scientific evidence exists that artificial sweetners cause cancer in humans. However, some studies done years ago where rats were given high doses of Saccharin developed bladder cancer. Subsequent studies involving human beings have never been able to confirm that first finding. Data about Aspartame also shows no clear link between cancer and human beings.

1500 people die of cancer daily. That is a 9/11 every two days. So in three days more people die of cancer than have died in Iraq. Plus, the youngest soldier to die in Iraq was 18 while youngest person to die of cancer was a newborn. So, it is better to put money into cancer research than to fight in Iraq which has never been a threat to us. This shows Bush is not a smart President. We can certainly keep America safe from terrorists without the Iraq war, but you cannot prevent people from getting cancer. 1/2 to 1/3 people will get cancer. Do the math. There is great research into cancer right now, but it will be delayed if funds are not available. The Iraq war is a loss cause and we need to get out and save lives. . Cancer cure is not a lost cause. Why should a baby, a teenager, a young adult, or even a 70 year old die of cancer because funds are not available for the cure? All these folks could then live to be 90 plus. You have to be a fool to not understand all this.

I think with the war in Iraq U.S.A has spent billions of dollars on military. You are totally right. Saving lives at home is much better than oversees at least the research that is done to save the lives can be shared with others across the globe to save everyone who need it.

The easy things are always the first things. You may as well ask why it takes so long to build a modern 100+ story skyscraper when in the past they could build 5 story buildings in much shorter time.

The reason we had success with so many diseases in the past century, was that all those diseases were similar, and thus similarly treated. Most were bacteria, treated with antibiotics. Others were simple viruses and treated with vaccines. What is left are the diseases that attack the body differently and thus must have new types of cures.

I cannot speak of aids or cancer, never experienced it, however I can speak of diabetes's, If they found a cure for diabetes instead of treating it, they would lose billions. My drug bill alone is around $400 a month, multiply that by the 15 or 20 million people that are diagnosed in the U.S. and the many millions more globally and you can see why they never want to cure anything. It is another example of corporate greediness, but they have all the guns, the people have none and until it is not profitable they will continue to rape the people.

Can anyone tell me of the detailed personal effects of liver cancer on them?

Research: Liver Cancer?
I can tell you my mums experience with this desease. She firstly started with colon cancer and then spread to her liver. My mum always used to eat quite well but when she started chemo her appetite went completely. From the beginning she knew that her desease was terminal. She quickly started losing weight and eventually her abdomen started swelling due to her liver getting enlarged. Also she was always very sleepy and quite weak. She took vitamins and also she was prescribed some vitamin milkshakes as she was not eating properly. This type of cancer is usually terminal as normally it is a secondary cancer, this means that there is cancer in another place of the body. My mum was given 6 months to live but my mum survived a year and 5 months as her will to live was so strong. Sadly my mum lost her battle to cancer on the 27 May 2006.
Reply:my friend had liver cancer....its a dangerous form of cancer because even if the cancer is diagnosed early, its hard to cure because the liver isnt working. Or sometimes it isnt working 100%. He could barely eat. But, thats not completely true. We dont know for sure. Because he also had stomach cancer, and part of his stomach was cut out and stapled. So, he ate very little. After that, he didnt eat much. So, he took some vitamins for the liver, on recommendation from the doctors. As a matter of fact, it helped fight off the cancer. I think its vitamins that help strengthen the immune system or something like that. This is opposite of what doctors say and what universities say. They say that, cancer lives on the same things normal cells do. So, if we eat, we get stronger, and cancer does too. But, they never say that the body has its own natural ability to fight cancer. So, the stronger you become, the better chance of you fighting even strong cancer. He grew very very skinny. He was about 130 pounds. After a while, he was weighing like 90 pounds.

I agree with what The last guy said. 1 thing I don't agree with is the chemo therapy. I guess my little cousin was one of the unlucky one to get too much chemo. My advice is these days. Check your PH level? 7.35 or better cancer has a harder time surviving.

Cells increase in number through mitosis. Chemotherapy works by stopping mitosis, but present medicines stop mitosis in all sorts of cells besides cancer cells. If there are enzymes or other chemicals needed for mitosis that are unique to cancer cells or at least a particular type of cell, then chemotherapy can be given in much higher doses without killing the patient.

Right now, chemotherapy targets too many non-cancer cells, so the drugs have to be stopped after a short exposure to let tissues heal from the chemotherapy. This requires a series of chemotherapy treatments over many weeks or months, and it prevents the docs from giving enough medicine to kill the cancers cells in a single dose.

We live across the dirt rd from one my daughter got leukaemia, I'm not saying that is the cause because my other 2 children are healthy, but maybe she had a predisposition to it from when i was pregnant ( i did smoke but very little, didn't smoke with other children) and the chemicals triggered something in her DNA to change. One gives you no treatment, merely hope if you join the association to find a cure for IBS, for Crohns, for MS, for Cancer....the other doctor gives you a simple cause and cure.

I don't think it really works that way. Yes the drug makers and docs are greedy and over charge for meds. They do it because they know we will pay. They exploit it. But they have done what every good business wants to do. They have made their products a nessesity and are making money.

I also think that we are realizing that there are diseases behind the symptoms. Like in your example, instead of simply only treating the infection, we are looking at WHY there was an infection.

Many docs due try to convince patients to participate in trials, but if there were no trials there would be no new meds. And the patient can always so no. Even after they sign up they can change their mind.

I think NA medicine is about finding out everything we can about the diseases we face.

People keep saying that there is a cure for cancer and its something so easy and inexpensive and the drug makers dont want us to know. I would like for some of those people to get cancer and then follow their own proposed treatment. And if it really were true, they wouldnt hide it from us. They would pull it off al over the counter sales and make it the most expensive treatment ever.

Our medical community is greedy, but they are not liars.

On Mother's Day, many men wore pink ribbons to support the fight and research against breast cancer. Many men marched in breast cancer research funding walks and parades. In fact, the Major League Baseball players (all men) used pink bats and wore pink armbands in the games on Mother's Day to support this very same cause.

Now, how many women will be wearing prostate cancer ribbons for Father's Day?

Let me take an educated guess based on previous patterns, and say: "nowhere near as many men that wore breast cancer awareness ribbons."

Further evidence that women today are far more sexist than men.

Let me also state that there is roughly the same amount of reported cases of prostate cancer per year as there is breast cancer cases (slightly over 200,000 for each) -- the number difference between the two diseases only being a few thousand.

Reply:Just because it has a ribbon doesn't mean that people are as aware of it as they are things such as AIDS and Breast Cancer. They are "advertised" every which way you look. Television, magazines, and even food and clothing products. Maybe if it got put out there more this wouldn't be an issue. Someone needs to take it and run like they did with these others. They are all tragic and it is sad that some diseases don't appear as important as others. I would wear one if I had it.

I don't think it's fair to make a connection between women not wearing these ribbons and women being sexist, though. This blue ribbon campaign has not been established long, and now that there is a ribbon for so many different causes, people are not paying as much attention to them.

"Cancer" is actually thousands of different diseases, each with a different set of causes that need to be defined so that more effective medications can be developed. Since cells are fantastically complex, each expressing tens of thousands of different proteins which then interact in a very dynamic fashion, determining what goes wrong in cancer cells is very challenging. Despite this, there have been terrific advances in the technology for investigating cancer and many effective treatments have been developed in the past two decades. Definitely progress would be faster if more money were devoted to this problem.

Implicit in your question is that too much money is being spent on cancer research with too little return. Just to keep things in perspective, the amount of money spent by the US government each YEAR on cancer research (~$5 billion dollars, see http://plan.cancer.gov/NCIBudgetRequest.... is close to what is spent each 2 WEEKs on the war in Iraq. Some cancer research has made great strides, people's survival rate has increased significantly in the last decade. However, certain cancers manage to evade cures because of their rate of growth and lack of symptoms. Remember slow growing cancers are the worst because of the fewer cycles of reproduction they go through which means less opportunity to destroy it. Also cancers that act systemically, which attack all systems are harder to treat as well because it is every where. Don't stop supporting the different research programs because they do make head way it just a very hard tedious battle.
Reply:Now listen. People will tell you that it is due to the drug companies, medical professionals, population control (good god people!!!) Cancer is not a wham-bam-thank you mam sort of issue. There is not one kind of cancer cell, there is not one kind of way to get it, and there is not one way to treat it. If there is cell in your body, there may be a trigger to make it malignant. Some cancers react better to Chemotherapy, some to Radiation, some to surgery. We have made incredible strides in the cancer fight, but we are still trying to figure out these diseases.

I work every week with cancer patients and their fight. Don't say that we are not fighting. I dare you to walk in my shoes for a week and then say there is no fight. We will win.

Another reason for not being able to cure all cancers right now is that the cure sometimes is just as lethal to the body as the cancer is. You are trying to maintain the healthy cells in the body while at the same time kill the cells that have become malignant. These cells have come from the healthy cells to begin with. Now do you see the issue? There will be a cure for cancer. It will start with one and work its way down.

Thats a tough question. Medicine is science, and science is rarely exact. While millions of ppl suffer through cancer today, if you look at what we can treat today, compared to say 20 years ago, we've come a long way. Thousands of ppl are alive today that just 20 years ago, heck even 10 years ago some ppl would be dead that are alive today.

When it comes to things like the art of medicine, you often have to look at how far we've come, not how far we need to go.

A lot of scientists worldwide are doing research on cancer, but why still people suffer from this desease?
Mutation is part of the issue. The sheer number of different kinds, another. Many are being cured. Many are being discoverd early enough.

Reply:Because we are all born with the gene. Either it develops or it doesn't. And there are so many forms of cancer and different stages of aggression. It's very difficult to cure it. You can compare Lymphoma (Hodgkins or Non-Hodgins Disease) which develops as cancer in Lymph Nodes. Similarly Sarcoma (osteosarcoma) can also be compared. Osteo means Bone related and bone, and sourronding tissues and muscles IS is called Osteosarcoma.

Reply:depending on what you want the comparison to prove or disprove, you could choose a cancer that is similar to leukemia like lymphoma or one that is completely different. you could choose to compare the life expectancy or the rate of how many people will be diagnosed with leukemia versus how many will be diagnosed with other forms of cancer. personally i would compare the funding available for more common cancers like breast cancer to the funding available for leukemias and lymphomas. the more common the cancer the more funding available, which leaves out so many forms and so many people.

Did you know that men can also get breast cancer?

Breast cancer isn't always fatal. My sister is a 14 year survivor. My aunt has had it twice in 9 years. I met a man when when we were doing chemotherapy who had it.

Breast cancer often starts out as a small lump felt during self exam, but can also be diagnosed earlier (before it can be felt) by mammogram, untrasound or MRI. In my case, it didn't show up on a mammogram that was taken 3 months prior and by the time I had surgery it was 2 centimeters and they also found lymphnodes that were malignant. That was 3 years ago and I'm doing fine. If you want to ask some more questions, please contact me.

The reason I am asking this is because I am writing a research paper for college on the topic. I am a Catholic and also conservative (normally against stem cell research) but my mother had cancer when I was younger so of course if she didn't have to go through what she did I should love the idea. Reply:I am for the use of stem cell research. We can cure so many diseases with it. Plus it is not like people are getting pregnant JUST to abort and give the fetus away. I saw on the news that everyday, in North America, 20,000 aborted fetuses are tossed in the trashed everyday. I say we use those ones, who will be dumped either way, and do the research. I do not support abortions just for the purpose of it.
Reply:What type of stem cells are you talking about? There are incredible things being done with adult stem cells, and also amniotic stem cells (growing a heart valve, for instance, for babies born with weakened heart valves). Absolutely yes on those.

Fetal cells, I'm still not decided on that one.
Reply:I'm for the use of embryonic stem cells. They offer the most potential for finding cures for the most serious diseases and illnesses.

I'm for the use of any research which has a hope of curing said diseases.

The ridiculous thing is the apparent logical disconnect of people when embryonic stem cells are mentioned. These people have no problem with invitro fertilization, in which potentially dozens of perfectly good eggs are destroyed or discarded if it means that a couple can give birth to their own baby. But if scientists want to use refrigerated embryos that would otherwise be discarded as biological waste to do stem cell research, everyone screams 'Oh noes! They want to kill babies!!'

Reply:There are different kinds of stem cell research. I presume you're talking about embryonic stem cell research, which I support whole-heartedly as someone diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis at the age of 25 (for those of you not familiar with that, it's a chronic illness and the reason you see all the little old ladies with the knobby, deformed hands).

I think every avenue available to us should be explored. I'm not saying we should be harvesting and creating embryos for use in stem cell research, but there are thousands of eggs left over from in vitro fertilization that will simply be discarded. If the "parents" of those eggs want to donate them to science, why shouldn't they be allowed to? It's their genetic material. People are allowed to donate their bodies to science once they die (my dad plans to do this), so why shouldn't a man and woman, if they're in agreement, be allowed to donate genetic material that will otherwise go in the trash can?

as for myself I would say that the current methods should be acceptable as far as research goes into treatment but only for research not for "production " . for that there needs to be further research into producing other means of producing stem cells.
Reply:Stem cells for treatment for cancer is a while off. Notice though that embryonic stem cells, for therapeutic use, are more effective than adult stem-cells, hence why they're at the centre of the debate currently.

That said, there was a medical trial in Europe where a man's substantia nigra ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Substantia_... ) wasn't producing enough dopamine, causing Parkinson's. Using embryonic stem-cells, they regenerated 80% of the mans substantia nigra and 'cured' his Parkinson's on his left side. That's where the research is headed and has more immediate promise.

And that's why it's so important to get as much research out there as possible.

I am sorry about your loved one it is very hard to watch someone you love die and there is nothing you can do about it. Two years ago this month I lost a dear sweet caring doctor I work with to pancreatic cancer. We all felt helpless, because we were.

The problem with pancreatic cancer isn’t that we do not have a cure, we do, its surgery. The problem is we do not have a screening exam to catch it early enough to do the surgery.

Cancer is not a money making racket. I live in Los Angeles County where we have had so many hospitals close it is now commonplace for people to wait over 40 hours in the ER to get a room. Hospitals do not close because they are making money.

I am able to make a living because of cancer but that doesn’t mean I want people to continue to suffer from it. If a cure were found tomorrow I would be the happiest person in the unemployment line.

No, cancer research isn't a racket; cancer costs governments huge amounts of money that would be saved if there was a cure. I live in the UK. I've had surgery chemotherapy, radiotherapy and hormone therapy. I didn't pay a penny for it, because we have a National Health Service - the state pays for our health care, including cancer care. Cancer treatments cost our government billions; if they could have cured me by giving me a once and for all cure , they would have. As it is, I could be back with a recurrence at any time to cost them many thousands more.

Any drug company discovering a cancer cure would make more money than they could have so far dreamed of making.

Scientists, doctors and researchers develop cancer at the same rate as the rest of the population, as do their families - they want cures as much as anyone. Doctors went into medicine to help people not kill them.

Best thing is to fight, fight, fight the cancer, hope you can live long enough for a new treatment to emerge to help you beat the disease.

Medical research, pharmaceutical research and development have all the funds that they need, and then some. I give my 10% to the kingdom of God, and from there it goes to actually help people. It may only happen locally, in my town, or for missions away from here, but at least it goes for what it was intended for.

Reply:The short answer is no. There's lots of inconclusive research on both sides. My opinion - look at it this way:

A microwave oven produces high power "radio waves" which cook food. A cell phone produces low power radio waves (albeit on a different frequency) and is arguably harmless.

Somewhere between two lies a threshold where the strength of the radio waves becomes harmful from a heating perspective. The debate rages about where that threshold is.

Cell phones do their best to minimize the power of the radio waves - they all turn themselves off when they're not really needed and turn down their power to the minimum required to keep your call alive.

I wouldn't worry about it.

Further evidence that women today are far more sexist than men.

Let me also state that there is roughly the same amount of reported cases of prostate cancer per year as there is breast cancer cases (slightly over 200,000 for each) -- the number difference between the two diseases only being a few thousand.

Reply:All cancer is bad. Breast, cervical, prostate, testicle and perhaps the worst skin and lung. Few men and women realize that statistically prostate cancer is the most common of all. More men would die of prostate cancer then women of breast cancer, except for the fact that men do not live that long. By the age of 35 there are more women then men. Men die of all other causes, injury, heart attacks, much more then women, so by the time of 65 or so when prostate diseases hit, many men are already dead. Sorry for the bad news but it is the truth, so all women and men should support all research for cancer, as it is the worst disease of all.
Reply:I wasn't even aware that there WERE prostate cancer ribbons, or that we were supposed to wear them on Father's Day.

It's pretty hard not to notice the light pink ribbons for breast cancer though. I don't mean that the ribbons themselves are particularly noticeable, just that the women who run breast cancer prevention organizations do a much better job of promoting breast cancer awareness events and such. I've seen plenty of billboards for breast cancer related issues, none for prostate cancer.

But I don't see why you're acting like this is womens' fault...if the men who run the organizations that deal with prostate cancer would be more PROACTIVE and vocal in making people more aware of the dangers of the disease, more people would care more about it. It's not like the government is giving the breast cancer people all this money...and it's not like the government is in charge of running the organizations. They're run by regular people who've found a cause they want to fight for and the money is largely from donations.

In short, I don't think men have a right to get all upset about society not paying as much attention to prostate cancer, when the people who are running the charities / awareness groups are apparently sitting on their asses. I'd have gladly worn a blue ribbon on Father's Day if I had even KNOWN this was going on.

I didn't wear a prostrate cancer ribbon on father's day, because-

1. I couldn't find them anywhere otherwise I would've bought one. Really, no-one was selling any in my area. If there was a march, I would've gladly joined.

2. I was helping my children spoil their father on fathers day.

I'm getting so tired of all that 'what about me?' victim stuff. Way to turn more and more women away from mens causes by putting us down. If you really want women to care, then perhaps instead of being negative, you could try stating the facts about the cause and promote it, so more people hear about it.

Just a gripe about breast cancer charities.

I hate them.

They sexualize the disease. It's disgusting. The fvcking pink ribbons and the "save the ta-tas" shirts and how raising money for breast cancer is supposed to be "fun" and pink and frilly. Lots of people buy into it and participate in the fund-raisers, which is obviously a good thing, but I still despise sexist breast cancer charities.

If you want to spread awareness about prostate cancer, you don't need to turn it into a competition with breast cancer. Show us some stats, give us a sob story or two, and put the link to the ribbon, and we'll all be more than happy to support the cause.

It is highly unlikely as colon cancer is a very slow growing cancer, so generally is something that much much older people get. A lot of the same symptoms for colon cancer can also be from other types of illness and conditions, like irritable bowel syndrome which can cause either constipation or diarrhea, and a lot of gas and bloating, cramps and abdominal pain. (i have this condition) , also, there is colitis, which is a chronic condition of an inflamed colon, which causes similar symptoms.
Reply:As with any other cancer, you're always at risk. Check with a medical professional (such as a local proctologist) to make sure that it is or isn't colon cancer. I hope that helps.

I've heard that certain types on deodorants and maybe their ingredients cause cancer. When I researched this topic, it said that it would only cause breast cancer. If thats not the only cancer it can cause, what other cancers can it cause?

The research I've read found that chemicals from certain aerosols had been found in breast cancers. That doesn't mean only breast cancer can be caused by aerosols, nor does it mean that aerosols necessarily cause cancer.

The study basically showed a statistical link between aerosols and cancer, which doesn't necessarily equate to aerosol use increasing your risk of cancer, it's at far too early a stage to be exactly sure.

For the moment if you're really concerned then stop using aerosols altogether, however until there're more definitive studies it's really all up in the air.

Go for one that has a good salt (sea salt or crystal salt), works awesome!

Because drug companies can.

Once they own a patent for a drug (ie. brand it), they're the only ones who can manufacture it and can therefore name their own price, without the fear of a competitor under-cutting them.

This year, a team at Imperial College found a way to bypass the legal patent on some medicines by altering the molecular structure of the drugs, then retaining the rights to new discoveries and not selling them to big companies. They urged other universities and charities to do the same.
Reply:because it takes lots of money to develop these drugs. Research, clinical trials, FDA approval process etc. Hundreds of millions. It really has nothing to do with the actual manufacturing process. Thats the easy part. Most cancer drugs come from plants. Its the years of research and trials that cost money.

I agree with the guy above as well. Legal costs also raise prices. Make a drug that gives 99 people a productive life and the 100ths family will sue because he died, when he would have died anyway. So, everyone else suffers.

Reply:Devlopment for one drug is very expensive. Not just cancer drugs.

I have read that only 1 in about 15 drugs that a drug company decides to develop actually makes it to market. So, drug companies have to recoup their losses on the successful drug that made it.

Even so, I believe some (most) drug prices are too high. I simply base this on the executive compesation and stock prices of the major pharmaceutical corporations.

Some drugs have been out for over 25 years now. You would like the price would be much lower.
Reply:It can take decades of research to discover develop a single drug or treatment. In those decades, salaries of researchers (which are not that large I might add), equipment, supplies, facilities charges must be paid which can come to hundreds of thousands of dollars for just one lab. Multiply this by the thousands of labs all over the US alone that are researching the many forms of cancer as well as the origins or genomics of cancer and we're talking astronomical amounts of money.

Sometimes the research leads to cancer treatments, sometimes it leads to treatments for other illnesses, sometimes it leads nowhere and a researcher has to go back to square one.

Then once a drug or treatment is discovered, it must go through animal testing and then human clinical trials which can take years as well, all the while money is being spent to keep the tests and trials going.

Then finally, if a drug, after the trial stage is deemed to be a successful treatment, patents are registered to prevent anyone else from making exactly the same drug and to make sure any profits go to the right person. (a but unethical considering many people in the background are doctors and have taken the hippocratic oath of do no harm. a patent, could very well be doing harm to patients when a drug is desperately needed). The drug must then be manufactured or synthesized and the costs of the manufacturing are determined by how the raw materials for the drugs can be produced, what and where the raw materials come from (sometimes rare plants, etc) and how long it takes to make it and how many manufacturers have the facilities needed to make it.

Sometimes a pharmaceutical company must come up with a whole new way of production and modify or build new manufacturing space to do this.

All of the costs of the successful or failed research that led to the drug, and sometimes expenses from research in other areas by the same institution or manufacturer can be factored into the cost of one successful treatment.

Now yes, there are charities that help with the funding, but those charities get money from donors (who often don't donate a lot of money because they don't have the funding or because there are other causes that they support) and many of those charities grant money to patient treatment and care, research, drug development, public awareness, etc. The money has to be spread out so thinly over all these outlets that no one area gets very large amounts from any one organization.

And many drugs are expensive, not just Cancer drugs, because all new drugs have to go through this. Sometimes the process is faster, sometimes not.
Reply:Cancer drugs are expensive because people (you %26amp; me!) expect them to work and to NOT HURT ANYBODY. If you discovered a pill that cured 99 out of 100 people with cancer (but killed the 100th person), I would think you were a genius, but America would think you were EVIL, and would sue you out of business because Mr.100 died!

We place too high a value on the lives of individuals (particularly lawyers!), and not high enough a value of the lives of entire populations. That's why people die of cancer...

One that was not is something called Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), "an advanced mode of high-precision radiotherapy that utilizes computer-controlled x-ray accelerators to deliver precise radiation doses to a malignant tumor or specific areas within the tumor."

My family is currently waiting on gene testing for stomach cancer. We know that there is a faulty gene but they just have to find it. It has been over 2 years now, they told us it would take approx 3. I have a 50/50 chance of inheriting the gene from my mother who died age 49. How did you all cope with the wait? I am now staring to get edgy, guess it cos I think I will hear soon what the future brings.

Reply:Think positive. A lot of cancers are actually fully treatable if they are caught early. Sadly, advance in medicine was not quick enough for your mum but, things are always improving and you are getting screened for the fault gene. You may not actually have it. If you do have the gene, you can be fully monitored and screened on a regular basis. Many people are walking around with the gene and not actually know about it until it's too late. Good luck - I am sure you will be fine.

Recently, someone in my family said they had cervical cancer and was diagnosed 10 years ago. In the beginning, they said that the doctor performed a pap smear, and from this, diagnosed her with cervical cancer. He gave her 10 to 15 years to live and told her, "Live your life!". Apparently, in the 90's, their was no cure or even treatment for this form of cancer.

However, after researching cervical cancer, I discovered that cervical cancer was typiclly caused by HPV, that a bioapsy must be performed in order to even diagnose this form of cancer, there are treatments, it's curable, and doctors typically give people 5-years to live upon diagnosis.

I presented these facts to the person making this claim and was told that in the 90s there was no cure for this cancer...the terms she used to describe her diagnosis wasn't medical at all.

What are the symptoms of cervical cancer? Ways it is diagnosed and treated? Was it treatable in the 90s? How can someone survive for 10-years?

The methods of treatment of cancer cervix were more or less same in 1990's as today, but that does not put anyone in bad picture,.. one has to see what it was then and what was actually advised, it is easy to point fingers.

For e.g. very early cancer (carcinoma in situ) can be treated by a simple meathod of LLETZ which is an office procedure and life is normal after few hours, patient is cured for life and may not remember anything(least of all- any medical terms) after 10 years.

You may speak to an oncologist in your area

And with early disease one can be completely cured of cancer and continue to live more than 10years and may die of natural causes(as most of us will)

Now they perform a complete hysterectomy and perform a PET/CT scan. The PET/CT scan is a noninvasive procedure that uses a radioactive sugar to identify cancer in the body. This test is far more accurate than cat scans.

Reply:Cervical cancer was treatable (I don't absolutely know how successfully) in the 50s! I am absolutely certain of this because my aunt was offered the choice of abortion and treatment or continuing an early pregnancy and then treatment for her advanced cervical cancer. She choose the latter, and treatment never took place because she died almost immediately after delivering my cousin.

An annual Pap smear is the best way to catch it soonest, BEFORE there are symptoms. Some women may be advised to have them more often. Once cancer has developed, the symptoms are usually abnormal vaginal bleeding and pelvic pain.

While we now know what causes many cases, and can therefor protect against it, I seriously doubt that treatment options have changed because of that knowledge.

Like most cancers, the treatments include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Each treatment regimen is specifically designed for a particular patient and her cancer, based on general health, choices by the patient, stage and grade of the cancer and many other factors.

One person's treatment is likely to look quite different from another's, and yet both may be successful.

Reply:I believe that this person is badly mistaken If she went untreated she would be dead now. How do I know it happened to my Mother. She noticed weird things like pain and bleeding even though she had went through menopause. But just shrugged it of and went on with life. next thing we know she was in the hospital with massive bleeding and had to have blood transfusions. They done chemotherapy and done a hysterectomy (I think that's what it's called forgive if I am wrong) At first it looked like she would be fine but it came back and spread. They said if it had been found earlier she might have had a chance. I'm not shore how long she had Cancer but she had symptoms for about a year that she ignored. We found out she had it February 2003 and she passed away in August of 2003 she only lasted 6 month's so it can take a life fast (fast for me anyway I know that there Are faster cancers but My mom was fine and then 6 months later was gone) There was a bad smelling brown thick discharge and she had bleeding like a period but got worse toward the end so bad she had to have transfusions every few days just to live and pain and tenderness down there. I'm not a nurse or Doctor but I can tell you from what I know from my mom that she is mistaken. There was Chemotherapy in the 90's I know that because in 93 I lost a step mother to breast Cancer that she battled for about 3 years. She had chemo.

Reply:I think that cancer causing factors in lifestyle are very difficult to identify because there are so many different kinds of cancer and because it starts in so many different ways. The only thing I know that ties the cancers together is that they are always started in the cell system. I do know that one of the newest innovations is what they call the arson treatment. I was what they called the perfect candidate for this research because I went into remission so fast and when I went in for the first installation I was put into the hospital because of my heart. It just could not take the strain at that time because of what had happened during my regular chemo during my 8 week stay in the hospital. Other studies found that exercising cancer patients had improved work capacity, lower heart rates at given exercise intensity, increased maximum workloads and time to exhaustion than did non-exercising cancer patients.

Psychological changes, including a decrease in total mood disturbances, decrease in depression and fewer problems sleeping were noted between the exercise and non-exercise groups.

I would agree to some extent on the first paragraph, IF treatment doesn't make it impossible to exercise.

The last paragraphs are not accurate at all. Work is near impossible unless there is no personal insurance, I know some people that worked thru treatments only to have their work insurance, but that eventually killed them... you need to rest, treatments are very hard on our body systems.

Depression is a factor with many cancer victims, after all.. when you are told you are going to die which is for the most part of cancer victims, its a little hard not to be depressed, at least at the start of it all. Later many of us come to terms with it. Sleep disturbances are common, either from meds, or from emotional issues. Sometimes the only time sleep comes is when one is exhausted from treatments. That would be with exercise or not. Exercise may help the physical side of wanting sleep... but it seldom shuts down the mind long enough to rest.
Reply:On paper or in theory all you mentioned is good and probably true, but having gone through cancer, surgery, chemo and radiation. More often than not the patient feels like s@*t and only wants to curl up in a ball and sleep or hug the white wishing well.

There are a number of risk factors for the development of breast cancer, including:

family history of breast cancer in mother or sister

early onset of menstruation and late menopause

reproductive history: women who had no children or have children after age 30 and women who have never breastfed have increased risk

history of abnormal breast biopsies

Though these are recognized risk factors, it is important to note that more than 70% of women who get breast cancer have no known risk factors. Having several risk factors may boost a woman's chances of developing breast cancer, but the interplay of predisposing factors is complex. In addition to those accepted factors listed above, some studies suggest that high-fat diets, obesity, or the use of alcohol may contribute to the risk profile. Another factor that may contribute to a woman's risk profile is hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

HRT provides significant relief of menopausal symptoms, prevention of osteoporosis, and possibly protection from cardiovascular disease and stroke. However, studies show that there is a small increased risk of developing breast cancer with HRT use. Thus, the use of hormone replacement therapy should be based on personal risk factors.

Of all the risk factors listed above, family history is the most important. In The Biological Basis of Cancer, the authors estimate that probably about half of all familial breast cancer cases (families in which there is a high breast cancer frequency) have mutations affecting the tumor suppressor gene BRCA-1. Nevertheless, when the family history is strong for development of breast cancer, a woman's risk is increased.

Also known as fibrocystic condition of the breast, fibrocystic changes are a leading cause of non-cancerous lumps in the breast. Fibrocystic changes also cause symptoms of pain, swelling, or discharge and may become evident to the patient or physician as a lump that is either solid or filled with fluid. Reply:About 50% of breast cancers are diagnosed in women with no family history of the disease, so identifying at-risk women is a crap-shoot at best. One of the lifestyle risks associated with BC are obesity, because fat cells manufacture estrogen. This would feed an estrogen-receptor positive tumor already started.

Some docs want women to have genetic testing done to see if they carry the marker for one of the types of breast cancer. One of the problems I see with this plan is - what will be done with this information? With credit card companies, the Veteran's Administration, and other types of sensitive computer systems being infiltrated and compromised, who's to say what would happen to a database filled with millions of womens' test results? Positive test results could be used to deny women jobs, life insurance or health insurance.

Medical research is in many cases not widely publicized. Patients with an interest in the trials and research are likely to enroll, but if patients don't have access to the information, and don't know whom to ask, they'll never have a chance to do so.

The practice of double-blind drug trials may discourage patients who suffer from certain life-threatening diseases because they do not want to jeopardize their life by being given a placebo or a potentially lethal drug. On Mother's Day, many men wore pink ribbons to support the fight and research against breast cancer. Many men marched in breast cancer research funding walks and parades. In fact, the Major League Baseball players (all men) used pink bats and wore pink armbands in the games on Mother's Day to support this very same cause.

Now, how many women will be wearing prostate cancer ribbons for Father's Day?

Let me take an educated guess based on previous patterns, and say: "nowhere near as many men that wore breast cancer awareness ribbons."

Further evidence that women today are far more sexist than men.

Let me also state that there is roughly the same amount of reported cases of prostate cancer per year as there is breast cancer cases (slightly over 200,000 for each) -- the number difference between the two diseases only being a few thousand.

Well, I think the biggest reason you won't see thousands of women wearing prostate cancer ribbons is because of marketing. Ribbons for awareness is a fabulous marketing tool, but it takes time to establish a "new" cause. This question is the FIRST I have seen or heard about the ribbons, and I am a health advocate. I've known about prostate cancer for years, and encouraged the men in my family to be screened. But when did these ribbons come out? Why haven't I seen them in every retail outlet in my town? It takes time to raise awareness.

So let's have realistic expectations, ok? When the prostate cancer ribbon has been in circulation for 5 years, then you can compare numbers.

This is not an example of sexism, it is simply a matter of needing more time and more labor (and presumably, more money) to get the word out.

Lastly, not all women are bad, just like not all men are bad, have a little hope and faith in the women that are trying to see it from a man's point of view.

Edit; That's great, I was worried there for a moment that you thought all women were sexist. But yes, prostrate cancer affects so many men, and even here in Australia, it's all about breast cancer in women and showing our support. Men need this support too. To the poster below, if women were given the chance and the support day was more widely available, then I'm sure more women would support this worthwhile cause, and I raise my hand first and btw I also talk with my husband about the importance of being on the look out for any changes and we chat about prostrate cancer, as I feel as though he doesn't know too much about it, and because I care for my hubby, I bring up the subject.

That's what I've been saying, how come men run like little wimps for womens' causes and women don't do the same for men? Of course women are worse sexists than men. They know that too. There are a hundred types of cancers and no body mentions those. It's only breast cancer.... How far the natural compounds are better than synthetic compounds in cancer research?

'Natural' compounds are not strictly better than synthetic ones in cancer research, or in any other drug development. And there is no difference between a molecule coming from natural source, and the same molecule coming from a synthetic process. That was elucidated years ago with the advent of organic chemistry (first synthesis of urea, a natural compound that can be found in urine).

As for compounds of strictly synthetic origin, ie those which do not exist in nature, well, some of them are even better, as for efficiency, toxicity, side-effects, than their natural counterparts. An example: aspirin. The raw stuff extracted from tree bark is awful for the stomach, and will make visible holes in it if used for more than one week. With a minor modification (a reaction called esterification), this molecule can and is used as an everyday drug without major problems.

Nature does NOT produce compounds for us; each organism produces them for THEMSELVES, for their own survival. Humans are just very clever monkeys whom have learn to use them as tools. And tools can be refined. Thus drug design.

Of course nature has had millions of years to develop these biologically active compounds, compared to our mere decades. This makes it the main source of inspiration to the medicinal chemist. That's why many pharmaceutical companies have branches which do prospection in different ecosystems. Very often natural compounds found during these searches are used as starting points for the design of a new drug.

How far the natural compounds are better than synthetic compounds in cancer research?
This is a natural process. Try Vitamin C therapy. A few years ago a cancer specialist came out with a paper that said the best cancer/infection fighter found to date was Interferon. At the time it was $15,000 a gram. The paper also said that Interferon was a by-product of the natural breakdown of Vitamin C in your body. Shortly after that the FDA tried to make Vitamin C by prescription only. Guess why? The FDA has the RDA for Vitamin C set at 64 mg a day, just enough to ward off scurvy. Linus Pauling, who got a Nobel Prize for his work with Vitamin C and a second Nobel Prize for Organic Chemistry, said that 1000 mg a day should be the minimum and 2000 mg a day if you are sick or smoke. He played tennis almost daily until the day he died at 96. Personally, I got sick twice a year for 2 weeks at a time, for more than 20 years, with something to this day the doctors have no idea what it was, but for a week in the middle of those 2 weeks I was flat on my back. I started Vitamin C therapy once I gave up on the doctors. I took enough to be asymptomatic for those 2 weeks. Too much and I got diarrhea and too little and I got sick. Within a narrow range, and it followed a bell curve over those 2 weeks, I was not sick. At the height I was taking 40,000 mg a day and 300,000 over the 2 weeks. After 2 years of that I have not been sick since – more than 15 years. Vitamin C acts as a natural diuretic so you need to drink a lot of water and watch your body in total, but my kidneys did not dissolve as the doctors predicted, or get massive kidney stones as other predicted. I dont think the tecnic for nanotecnology is profected but this may be what you are thinking of. There is still no cure for some cancers but most are now treatable and I heard recently they have profected a process which is simular to the radioation and cemo they use now but more relyable and safer..which is fantastic

As my treating doctor well put it across - there is never a permanent cure for cancer of any kind. After a period of five years of treatment, the cancer has not resurfaced you are declared 'cancer free'. Cancer free means you will live a little longer as cancer cells are still alive and can surface at anytime , especially as your body is always vurnable.

Regarding the donations, its a topic one rather keep away from.

My team captain of my lacrosse team had one from of cancer, he went to a specialiast and 6 months later he was playing lacrosse again.

So even if a research center gets a successful treatment for one cancer, they can go on to the next and try to solve that.

The reason for such expenditures is because AIDS is a political disease. I say political because there is a strong lobby pushing for government money to spend on this disease. And like you pointed, preventable through abstinence and not doing the intravenous drugs.
Reply:This is an interesting question to me so, I'll try to leave partisanship out of my answer. AIDS is much less rampant than heart disease for certain. As for cancer, it depends which type you're referring to. Most cancers are fairly rare and AIDS is actually on the same level of prevalence as most individual cancers. Summed together though, cancer is much more prevalent than AIDS as you can see in the last column of the pdf in my source list.

EDIT: The irony of you calling us uneducated cracks me up. These days, contacting AIDS through transfusions pretty much doesn't happen. They test the blood now. HOWEVER....at the onset of the epidemic....that is one way it was spread. A lot of people contacted it that way. Should they be left to die because we won't do any research? How is that even humane? You assume that everyone caught it by using drugs or being loose. Seriously? There ARE other ways to get it. First, our current tests today simply cant detect the single cancer cell. You cant label something a cure if you have no way of proving the patient is cured, which they clearly are not if there are still cancer cells present. We dont even completly understand most of the cancers or what causes them. How do you cure something you dont understand?

Second, they wont loose money with a cure, they will make more than they could ever hope to make now.

Think about a couple things.

How many people would they have had to treat to determine it was a cure? How many people would be keeping their mouths shut? By occums razor, that itsnt likely. People talk.

Second, any idea how much the current possible cures cost compared to reg chemo and rad? I have leukemia. I went through 6 rounds of chemo over 10 months the first time, spent the majority of the 10 months admitted. Then after I was done with chemo, I had to still see the docs, first weekly, then monthly for blood tests and biopsies and other such post treatment care. I relapsed a year ago. Went through 2 rounds of treatment, 2.5 weeks in critical care in ICU (that 2.5 weeks alone cost more than anyone on this board makes in a single year).

I then went through stem cell transplant this past summer, which is the possible most likely cure for leukemias, lymphoma, and possibly every single autoimmune disease or disorder we know abuot.

The unit of blood that contained the stem cells alone, cost more than the rest of my combined medical treatment over the previous 2.5 years, and thats not counting the mandatory 6 week hosp stay in a critical care unit, the chemo, radiation, other blood transfusions, all the meds, and the extensive post treatment care (my monthly meds total about 5000 per month). All of this btw, has been paid for by the American working public.

Now, based on that info, are they gonna make or loose money there when the transplant can be labeled a cure (which it cant be, bc bone marrow biopsies can only detect the leukemia when there are more than 3% blast cells I believe. And by the time it shows up on blood work, your marrow is entirely blast cells.)

We will wont be donating as much to research, but rather to agencies who help the patients who are in the 99% of the worlds population that cant afford the treatment get it. Insurance wont cover it, because no one would pay the premiums at the level they would have to raise it to. Medicaid and Medicare wont cover it bc the American working public wont give up the tax money that would require. More money would be spent on awareness.

I would like to add some insight as to why cancer treatment does cost so much. The treatments spend 10-20 years in the lab before they ever even reach clinical trials. Then another 10 years or so in trials. Some treatments make it to the end of clinical trials, then something comes up that proves it to not work or not be practicle or something like that. They have to recoup the money in some way so that they can continue to research

But cancer is hundreds of diseases, not just one. The difficulty is that different cancers are caused by different things, so no one strategy can prevent them, and different cancers respond to different treatments so no one treatment can cure them all. There will never be a magic bullet that cures all cancer, but there is much research and dedicated hard work going on in all types of cancer to try and find cures.

And yes, some cancers can already be cured Seven out of ten children are cured of cancer. Testicular cancer, Hodgkin's disease, and many cases of leukaemia can all be cured in adults with chemotherapy, most skin cancers are cured with surgery, and many cases of thyroid cancer and cancer of the larynx are cured with radiotherapy.

Many other types of cancer are also cured if they are found early enough. But there is still a long way to go, especially with some of the commonest types of cancer such as lung, breast, bowel and prostate cancer.

And there is no secret cancer cure and no conspiracy to hide a cancer cure from us . The conspiracy theory is an urban myth, a sort of game played by those who have not had cancer or close experience of it.

Just think about it for a moment - if there were such a conspiracy drug companies would be keeping quiet about the cure even though it would bring them fame and fortune. Any drug company discovering a cure would make far more money than they can have dreamed of making up till now.

And doctors, scientists, researchers etc would be watching their relatives die and dying themselves (they and their families develop cancer at the same rate as the rest of the population) rather than co-operate to find a cure or revealing the existing secret cure

And in order to prove that any secret, hidden cure worked, thousands of people would have to have been cured by it. They’d all be keeping quiet too – not a word to the media from any of them either. Come on - they'd be shouting from the rooftops!

Most unlikely of all, every medical professional in the whole world would have agreed to keep existence of a cure secret. Every single one. One blabbermouth, one disgruntled researcher or sacked nurse and the whole conspiracy’s blown. Newspapers and other media wouldn't have got a sniff of it. Likely?

Existing treatments aren't perfect - very far from it. One day people will look back on them with horror, much the way we look back on blood-letting now.. But they are all we have at the moment, and we know, because they have been tested and proven in double-blind clinical trials, that they save many lives and prolong many, many more; in this they differ from any alternative 'treatments'.
Reply:wow with the exception of a few here, people really dont have a clue. cancer is not a disease, it is a family of diseases. there are about 5 thousand different kinds. and i am proof that thaere are cures that are in use. as for research, i agree it takes so long to get treatments and the preventitive meds approved. that is because everybody is so afraid of getting sued after telling us that such and such works then 1 person dies that it didnt work for. other than preventing it, finding a cancer early is the biggest and best thing you can do. they now have a prevent med for cervical cancer that would have saved me a lot of aggravation if it had been out 20 years ago. and nobody ever tells people all the things that can mutate the genes (cause of cancer) because it wouldnt be politically correct to tell them that if theyre fat, it increase their risk by over 40 % or that multiple sex partners increases risk by over 38%. hey lets all keep quiet because it is none of our business what someone else does right? cures are available but the public needs to be educated on how they can do their part to prevent it in the first place.

My partner has taken on a huge burden of responsibilities since my diagnosis. My partner now does all the grocery shopping, so I don't have to be exposed to crowds of people while my blood counts are low; all the housework so I can get the rest I need; changing the cat litter boxes so I am not exposed to germs; as well as keeping me company during chemotherapy infusions, attending appointments with the oncologist so that we both can ask questions, etc. My partner also tolerates my mood swings without flinching and always maintains a positive attitude.
Reply:my dad had cancer and it was very hard to see him go through. i was constantly afraid of loosing him. i wanted him to be there to see me graduate, get married, and have children. i cried an awful lot of the time but i used resources that helped me immensely. talking to people helped. writing and playing the piano also helped. i prayed every night. thankfully my dad made a full recovery and we are at the 2 and 1/2 year mark. hope this helped.
Reply:My husband had colon cancer. It affects the family in so many ways. He was diagnosed as terminal in 2003 when our daughter was 5 months old. The oncologist said to not give up. You never know when a new drug could come out that helps. I wanted to keep a positive attitude for my husband because he was a fighter and lived 4 years after that diagnosis. I didn't want him to think I was thinking he would die but it crossed my mind every day. It's hard to make any future plans because that thought is always in the back of your head, "If he dies, what will I do". We had considered buying a new house because ours is getting fairly old but I talked him out of it because I thought "How would I pay for this if he dies". It also was hard on my daughter. Having to get up at all hours of the night to go to the hospital if he got sick. And just not being able to play with her dad the way other kids could. He had 2 ports for chemo, a feeding tube and a colostomy so she couldn't just jump on him. Also in the last 6 months of his life, he was on a feeding tube so he wasn't eating any solid foods. Needless to say we didn't go out to eat anymore and we had to be home by 7:00 pm every night so he could start the feeding tube. I don't want to sound like it was so awful for us. I know he was in much pain and he felt bad for us having to go through it too but it really does affect the daily lives of everyone who lives in the same house as the person who has cancer.
Reply:My best friend has cancer. The first time she was diagnosed, it changed our entire relationship and made us closer. A lot of people backed off, I stuck by, remained calm during the er visits, chemo, breakdowns, freak outs, etc.

You learn to be incredibly strong for someone besides yourself. I have amazing tolerance of others' faults becasue I really understand how deep personal pain can be.

For a while I was too centered on my friend. We were in our 20's and not married, so I was her everyday primary caregiver. Her mom came into town for major surgery and a lot of the chemos, but everything else came to me. I scooped cat litter when her counts were low, answered the phone at 3 am when she couldn't sleep because the drugs gave her nightmares. I glared at the people who stared at her bald head in some morbid fascination. My life did not exist outside of her needs.

I've found more balance. I still answer the phone every time she calls no matter what because I never know what might be going wrong, but I've reached out to some of our other friends to help and she's learned to cope with her situation on her own more.

It affects us all differently.
Reply:When I was first diagnosed with breast cancer, all the women around me who had been stalling in getting mammograms went and got it done. I think it gets those people involved with you thinking about the meaning of life and what is important to them. I think most realize that their relationships mean the most to them.

What do you think? 1994 Researchers discovered the cancer stem cell in AML (leukemia). Other researchers did not believe it. Since then, about 15 cancers have been found to have cancer stem cells. Now the cancer stem cell is the cell that produces the cancer cell. Treatments for the last 30-40 years target only the cancer cells, missing the stem cell altogether. This may be why you get complete remissions in cancer (no cancer cells), but then the cancer returns because the cancer stem cell remains to regrow the cancer cells. Research is proving this out at Stanford, U Toronto, U Mich. and Hopkins. Yet other research centers and doctors have not picked up on this idea. This is akin to malpractice perhaps. Clinical trials will be coming out to target the cancer stem cells, and if you get some cures, then there will be a complete shift in thinking. Too bad it has taken 40 years.

Reply:It's starting to look like cancer stem cells are the key to treating cancer. However, you must realize science (not just medicine) has always been a learning process. There are and have been many brillant people working on cancer research. If you think it's common sense, you should get your BS, MS, and PhD in biology or chemistry and see for yourself.
Reply:Even if this is true, you still have not addressed the key issue. What is causing the stem cell to become a cancer cell????? This really changes very little in the battle against cancer. The PROCESS of carcinogenesis is still the challenge that needs to be understood and addressed. Whether carcinogenesis drives a stem cell or a differentiated cell to become cancerous, the process still is the problem.

No one knows for sure where treatments get stopped. I CANNOT do the walk....i have been on her only intermittently in the last 6 weeks...as the pain i my back is excruciating, now FINALLY after multiples of years, I am in the capable and gentle but VERY well educated Physical Therapists. i am true to my reps they have given me as homework.....it falls the walk that is, on the 5th anniversary of my mothers passing, and I REALLY wanted 9ut of a three day walk, and 60 miles at that that in NO way can i do this...i had to aquiesce to it and make the decision to wait until i can walk like that again......soon enough I shall be doing cartwheels again!!!!!Anything that is stopping yuo from completing something physical that you had your heart set on????

Reply:Ah, I was afraid of that and am not at all surprised. I have bursitis in both shoulders that prevents me from lifting over 10 # and both my grandchildren weigh much more than that . I pick them both up anyway but the pain sometimes has me in tears at night %26amp; prevents me from sleeping well. Have a hard time reaching for things higher than chest level. You will be ready next year and in the meantime...they can probably use good cheer leaders along the way or huggers at the finish line!

Two weeks of the expenditure on this war is the entire budget for cancer research for one year. 1500 people die of cancer each day..that's a 9/11 every two days. The medical research budget has been cut by the Bush administration, researchers are hurting for funds. The war on terror was not in Iraq! The war on cancer is through medical research. but Bush cuts the funding and restricts stem cell research

I don't know about a cure, that's anybodies guess. We certainly could have made many major advances in research and developing new medications and treatments so cancer patients could live longer, have a better quality of life and a much better chance of cancer going into remission.

Being able to finance multiple studies with new treatment and drugs, more cancer patients could be used in the studies that could eventually lead to a cure.

Reply:Mental attitude does affect cancer. As silly as it might sound, people that focus positive thoughts about health can have miraculous cases of remission. You can even find cases here on Yahoo answers. They always credit Jesus and religion to their miraculous recovery.

I have also noticed when people become really depressed (due to the death of a loved one or whatever) you sometimes see them also die shortly thereafter.

A positive attitude towards treatment of cancer should yield more successful results. After all, placebos have been proven to work in different test studies. You are also anoptimistic and determined individual when you have a positive mental attitude. The power of the human will is pretty amazing.

A lot of claims have been made, but did you notice that they're only made by the companies trying to sell you their product. There is no study or other data to correspond to their claims. I personally would not waste my money. A reverse osmosis system will do the same thing to water and is a lot less expensive.

I recently saw Gwyneth Paltrow's mom on TV and her husband died of cancer and had never smoked....just got me thinking that as much money that is spent every year on research in the US that we would have more answers to this disease and the toll it is taking on our health care and of all the oncologists, do they have any understanding of the source of this disease?

There are several different kinds of lung cancer, and only a few are linked to smoking.

It's a very difficult problem to investigate, as cancer cells have mostly the same DNA as our normal cells. Probably there is something that turns on a cancer gene, and causes a tumor to start growing. The immune system can destroy some of these tumors, but we don't understand why some tumors escape the immune systems defenses. So it's a coplicated dance between or genes, out environment and our immune systems.

I doubt pollution is the cause--19th century London didn't have great air quality, but that didn't cause a spike in cancer...

Science should be affecting society and I believe it is. Contraceptives are the reason for young people having sex, spouses cheating, etc. Sports were there first and steroids came along and improved the sport. Its not like some1 created steroids and then thought " what can i create to better put my massive strength to work". The avian flu scare was created by science. But it is also a two way street, science wouldnt create genetically engineered plants if they didnt feel thats what people wanted. This was an interesting question and was hard to answer. Im not sure if I went where u wanted, but hopefully Ive helped in some small way.

I am alive because of my oncologists research in the field of lymphoma. He has saved my life through his clinical trials and was able to pinpoint the chemotherapy regiment to give me.

The money has not been burned away. I am grateful for everyone who has contributed.

(the 'good' type of leukemia) at age of two. The docs told my brother that she has an 80% chance of survival, will undergo 3 years of chemo and that life as they know it will never be the same. Advocacy for pediatric cancer research has been a passion of mine ever since I set foot in the pediatric cancer ward of the hospital to visit my niece. Here are some facts below related mostly to pediatric cancer (from various websites including www.lls.org and www.curesearch.org):

Facts on childhood cancer rates and survival rates

-The incidence of childhood cancer is increasing. The cause of this is unknown.

-Cancer is the number one killer of children by disease. It is the second leading cause of all childhood deaths exceeded only by accidents.

-Research and advancements in treatment has lead to a 70% decline in the leukemia death rate for children 0-14 years of age over the last 3 decades in the United States.

-For all childhood cancers, the overall decline in mortality was nearly 40% between 1975 and 1995, about 2.5% per year decrease, even while the incidence increased by 0.8% per year.

-Only about 20% of adults with cancer show evidence that the disease has spread to distant sites on the body at diagnosis yet 80% of children are diagnosed with advanced disease.

-Most adult cancers result from lifestyle factors such as smoking, diet, occupation, and exposure to cancer-causing agents. The cause of most childhood cancers in unknown.

Cancer research and funding facts:

-The government recently CUT the budget for Childhood Cancer research.

-In the past 20 years only one new cancer drug has been approved for pediatric use.

-Approximately 70% of children with cancer participate in research trials compared to only 3% of adult cancer patients. As a result, many of the advances in adult cancer treatments are due to breakthroughs in childhood cancer research.

Well, I'm no researcher, and the likelihood that someone is just going to give you detailed info about it is slim. Maybe you can take a favour from an undergrad.

mRNA splicing is peformed by small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs). They are a protein RNA complex that binds to a certain consesus sequence at the boarder of an intron. There are many of them and they complex together and change confirmation in such a way to splice the RNA and excise the intron. I don't remember of the top of my head, since you can look it up any time. There are good figures in Molecular Bio of the Cell (Alberts et al.) but Wikipedia is good too.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MRNA_splici...

The actual effect it would have of extracellular signaling is that certain mRNA transcripts can be spliced in alternate ways resulting in translation to a different product that can have a drastically different activity. Off the top of my head I can think of half an example: calcitonin is produced in the thyroid gland by C cells, in these cells the gene is spliced to produce calcitonin (stimulates bone mineralization). In other parts of the body the same gene is alternatly spliced to make something completely different in function. Right now I can't remember what that is though.

So through alternate splicing extracellular (paracrine, endocrine, autocrine signaling) signalling can change from cell type to cell type, or under different conditions, due to the alternate splicing of an mRNA transcript. This happens in eukaryotes only (not bacteria).

I would get out my books and give a more detailed answer with citations and all, but I have an organic chemistry exam tomorrow, too bad you didn't catch me last term when I had my molecular bio exam. I hope this helps, the wikipedia articles are accurate, and this info although undetailed is accurate.

A friend of mines daughter, whom I knew well, and now her mother, died of breast cancer. Her daughter found out after she was pregnant, choosing to keep the child instead of doing a lumpectomy and radiation therapy, knowing it was a death sentence for her. She was 22 when she died and her daughter was 2 years-old!!

What is your issue with it? Sixty-percent of the 3 BILLION a day we sink into Iraq goes to corporate welfare!

There are hundreds of people working in labs across the country researching cancer and trying to come up with a cure for it. Just how long will it be before someone finds it? When we do find a cure, it will dramatically change people's lives.

Some cancers can already be cured. Seven out of ten children are cured of cancer. Testicular cancer, Hodgkin's disease, and many cases of leukaemia can all be cured in adults with chemotherapy, most skin cancers are cured with surgery, and many cases of thyroid cancer and cancer of the larynx are cured with radiotherapy.

Many other types of cancer are also cured if they are found early enough. Yes, there is still a long way to go, especially with some of the commonest types of cancer such as lung, breast, bowel and prostate cancer

The difficulty with finding a cure for cancer is that cancer is hundreds of diseases, not just one. Different cancers are caused by different things, so no one strategy can prevent them all, and different cancers respond to different treatments so no one treatment can cure them all. There will never be a single magic bullet that cures all cancers. But, as you say, there is much (underfunded) research and dedicated hard work going on in all types of cancer to try and find cures; treatments will continue to improve and cures will be found.

And a cancer like breast cancer is not the same in every person who has it. Some cancers ARE being cured. Ask Lance Armstrong. Most women with breast cancer are cured.

Many cancers could be prevented - - which is better

than a cure. Smoking still causes many cancer deaths.

Why was cancer not such a problem 100 years ago? The average life expectancy was 47 years. Infections killed most people, but many of these have been cured one by one with antibiotics or vaccines. Most patients with cancer are over 50, and the majority are over 60. We see more cancer now because people live longer.

Cures for every single cancer would not topple our world,

but we may run into a problem taking care of an increasing population of very old people. Sooner or later, we all die

from something. It needs to be that way or there would be

no room for the younger people.

If all cancers were eliminated, some 23% of all deaths each year in the U.S. would be eliminated. But we would still go

Medical oncologists are also blood specialists and internal medicine specialists, but we are swamped with cancer patients. We would LOVE to have cures for our patients

Instead some scientist will find a protein which they can control and which will invade a cancerous lesion and replace the rampant growing cell. But this will only wotk in certain types of tumour.

The next step will be find similar methods for other types of cancer, perhaps just bone cancer or blood cancer (leukemia)

It is general agreed among scholars that it will be gradual step by step process and must certainly include genetic engineering which somehow is opposed by right wing evangelistic members of our society who accuse some branches of the healing arts as "playing God".

In vitrio and gene transplanting are just two examples of advanced medicine leading to cures which the governemt has almost banned.

That cure that you so wish for will come, if not in my lifteime, then, perhaps in yours.

This cure for cancer though is an admirable thing can never be fulfilled as there would be a lot of coperatives, investors and their ilk who won't like it and they would do everything in their power to stop it or slow it down. It burns holes in their greed to accumulate more money than before. And would they stop and do nothing?

It is like that one day in the USA there would be free visits to doctors and health care to everybody.

The world is ruled by money, power and sex. We are talking about power and money here.

If and I repeat it if, there would be a cure for cancer, Wall Street would crash down so much that it would leave a smoldering deep hole in the ground, Governments would fall, people would wake up from and would finally understand the lies that have been rammed down their throats by the people in power.

In other words there would be one big hell of a change, that people who at present are in power would get their dues at the end.

Try to magine that they would find a cure, what happens next?

I don't know but I have an idea and this would be that the world would be torn upside down, inside out as people who would be more fitter would be more wiser and rules have to change with the possibility that what is 'wrong' today would be 'right' tomorrow and vice versa.

That is what I think and I hope that I won't be there when this thing happens.

They usually fund university scientists who are paid to do research anyway, and I am not sure who else they fund. Is there not enough market incentive for big pharma to be looking for a cure? If so, then why are people always trying to raise money for cancer research? Isn't that like giving charity to Bill Gates to find new anti-viral software?

Why should we give to cancer charities?
First of all, giving to cancer charities is not only for research. Depending on the charity, money is also used for awareness campaigns and providing assistance to patients and their families.

If you have real concerns about where the money goes, research the charities' cost to raise a dollar through GuideStar or Charity Watch.

I think there would be more financial incentive in keeping people "sick."
Reply:Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the country. A cure would do wonders for our life expectancies. Many researchers at public universities depend on grants to provide both their funding for research and for their salary. Without funding, the researcher would lose her/his job.
Reply:There is a statistic that 90% of all *new* discoveries occur in academia - ie, universities.

The issue here is one of priority. Pharamaceutical companies are - naturally - interested in making a profit. And new drug discoveries are amazingly expensive to get. From 10,000 possible drugs, on average, *one* will make it to the clinic. And you have still had to pay for all the development of the other 9,999.

Universities on the other hand - though they *are* worried about keeping the funding flowing - do not worry about profit as such. They are more interested in making the new discoveries, and don't really care how much it costs, or how long it takes.

So, effectively, the Pharmaceutical companies buy useable discoveries off the universities. This benefits both sides, and means that each can get on with doing the part of the work they are really interested in.

And, sadly, university scientists are not "paid to do research anyway". I am a university research scientist - and I have three years of funding at the moment. This means that I am paid (by a large funding body) to do my research for three years. After then, I'll need to get another source of funding. The university do not actually pay me: the money comes to me from the funding body.

Remember that universities, unlike companies, are not normally profit-making concerns, and do not have much of a source of income for research except the money they get given by charities and governments.
Reply:University scientists are not the only ones doing research, there are many independant labs %26amp; groups that do research new cancer drugs and possible cures.

The American Cancer Society also provides many local benefits to cancer patients which include free wigs %26amp; mastectomy supplies, free rides to and from cancer treatments, free hotlines and no matter where you live you can find access to these programs.

Read your links--pretty interesting to know that DuPont makes not only many cancer causing chemicals, but also chemotherapies, and Astro-Zeneka (sp?) not only manufactures mammogram machines, but promotes breast cancer awareness month, emphasising that all women should get screened, though many countries have stopped allowing this for women under 50 (and even after then, its validity is dodgy). Most "immunotherapy" is based on something similar to what you think you have thought up. Many current cancer treatments involve injecting a patient with "killed" T.B. to provoke an immune system response, then the patient's own white cells destroy the cancer cells.

If enough $ went towards cancer research, I believe we would have cures and vaccinations to prevent EVERY KIND OF CANCER IN THISWORLD!!! That not being the case, we have a very hard journey in funding the research needed to conquer this horrible disease.I personally have a 10 yr old diagnosed with Leukemia on 6-14-04.We are done with chemo,losing hair,being sick,...and since her treatment protocal does not guarantee 100 percent REMISSION,we now sit and play the waiting game praying that cancer does not come knocking again,I dread the day CANCER ever reared its ugly head into the world.I pray that this answer helps at least one person to get up and do something,anything to help raise awareness of cancers of any kind,and by all means, if you have extra $ and are looking to help others then please think about giving for research,we don't have enough $ erradicated to conquer and defeat this monster.

In the US, every single medication that is fda approved is tested on animals. That includes cancer research, allergy meds, heart meds, and yes, that tylonal or advil you just took.

But, it is done as humanly as possible. THey are often genetically altered to be more 'human like'. They are also often altered to not be able to feel pain except when pain is what is being studied.

.......I THOUGHT SOMEONE WOULD NEVER ASK!!!!!!!!!!! Have you noticed that there have been millions and millions and millions of dollars collected and spent on "so called " cancer research" and other types of "research" ..looking for that "special" "drug" that will wipe out cancer..AND we are no farther ahead than many years ago!!!! HAVE you also noticed that they NEVER send you to a health food store...MANY herbs are soooooooooooooo beneficial, and the reason they don't is that it would hurt their "practice" and besides they don't make money off of health food items........MY blood sugar has stabilized and my cholesterol is where it should be because of herbs.....I have a very strong feeling that certain herbs would "reverse" diabetes symtoms...AND there are certain herbs that have been proven to destroy certain types of cancer cells.....GOD BLESS !!

Cancer kills 7 million people worldwide each year. Yet it is a treatable disease that—in time—is beatable. However, in today’s troubled global environment, valuable resources that would otherwise go to cancer research are frequently re-directed by the crisis du jour.

What can we, as individuals and as a global community, do to focus %26amp; mobilize our governments to find the cures that will make cancer a fear of the past?

How can we make curing cancer a global priority?
How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

I think the answer resides in the people. The more people to champion the cause, the more likely movement will be made towards a cure. THere is a role for everyone.

1. Invest in the future.

The children of today are the hope for tomorrow.

2. Advocate for change.

The Leukemia %26amp; Lymphoma Society and other cancer organization make it easy for you to email letters to your elected officials. If a lot of emails arrive on a cancer issue, you bet they will look at it.

Asking questions like this, while general in nature, help people start thinking about what they can do.

3. Participate in a fundraising event hosted by a cancer organization.

Many of them have benefits to the participant as well as the patients.

4. Donate to a cancer organization.

I know there are a lot of worthy causes competing with what little funds we have (for some us), but moeny, time %26amp; resources are all commodities for non-profits.

5. Evangelize.

Tell the people around you to get involved as well. They can support your efforts, join you in your fight or just spread the word. No ask, no get.

If more people took on one role above, if more celebs helped heighten the awareness %26amp; specifically called people to action, if one politician took a stand, i think we would be surprized at what we could accomplish.

I personally feel that there is a natural medicine which can control

the growth of cancer cell and stop the condition of the affected in a stable level so that he lives a normal age period.

The coat of the medicine will be just $50 which will be sufficent for one month course and the patient has to continue it throughout his life.

Reply:First we'd have to learn to stop blowing each other up. Then maybe there's be a possibility of learning to help one another.
Reply:Most people who are responding to this have no understanding of the pharmaceutical industry. Give the big pharma a better incentive for curing disease (such as patent protection globally) and they will invest the millions of dollars necessary to find a cure. As it stands now, the financial incentive and risk/reward ratio is just not sufficient. The government should either subsidize or have better benefits arranged for companies taking huge financial risks to cure diseases. Otherwise, venture capital money will continue to go to things like new software developments which has a higher rate of return. Biotech is extrodinarily risky as an investment due to long FDA approval times and clinical trials. As usual, our governments regulations and rules are stifling the biotech's industry's need for growth...as a result many diseases continue to go untreated. Too few people in this country have an understanding of this to change politics.

Sadly most people responding in this thread have the views of the general population of america...which is blaming the pharma companies for not finding a cure. It is the government which is restricting the growth of the biotech industry by doing things like banning stem cell research that will limit the cures for diseases.

Believe it or not, insurance companies are also limiting your chance for finding a cure. They don't want to pay the $$$ it takes to treat people with new medications, they want to use the oldest cheapest things around. So, even if there was a new cancer treatment, good luck getting your HMO to actually pay for it.
Reply:As bad as i hate to say it. It will never be a global priority to cure cancer. I'm not saying this to be mean and i'll explain why i say this. With Dr's and pharmacutical companies so money hungry it will never happen, because there just isn't any money in it. If there was a cure for cancer they would get that one time fee for curing someone who got cancer. Now with just having treatments that help sustain the person's life a little longer it makes them more money. The person has to come back to the Dr. multiple times a week sometimes for treatments. Some of the medication that's just for the pain and side effects of the cancer treatments can be as much as $600 for a ONE month supply. That's not including the Dr's visit's or chemotherapy or any other test's or therapys they get while at the doctors. This is also the reason their won't be a cure for aids. Now if we can get the government and Dr's to not be so money hungry MAYBE we could make finding a cure for cancer a global priority. Until then All we can do is hope for a miracle, and pray that our loved ones don't suffer more than they need to.
Reply:Curing cancer can be made a global priority by practising methods of " Each One Teach One ". People die of cancer due to lack of knowledge. By initiating each one teach one concept in schools, villages, seminars etc. we can at the most inititate in people, a habit of getting routine check-ups. Also, the way seminars are conducted to spread AIDS awareness, cancer also calls for one. I sincerely feel that if each aware person teaches an unaare person it will make a difference.

Reply:Cancer research is definitely important, but our incidences of cancer would decrease if our society was healthier in their diet, exercise, emotional health, and stress levels. All of these have been linked w/ cancer. Granted, genetics plays a role also, so cancer research is valid, but so is preventing cancer in the first place through a healthy life. This goal should be a global goal, to promote health in all countries, not just industrialized. Global health where everyone has access to healthy food, decreased stress levels, and an emotionally and spiritually rich life will decrease the level of many of our chronic diseases including cancer.

Reply:Well, considering that volume 284, July 26, 2000 of the JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) List the three top causes of death as Heart Disease, Cancer and prescribed pharmaceuticals, treatments and surgeries, I would say that we have a real tough issue on our hands. 1971, cancer was the number 8 killer, now its number 2. Methods of treatment haven't changed since then, either. Surgery, radiation or chemotherapy. How many died from the treatment before they would have died from the condition? So, it's time for academia to get out of its box and find out why we're having all of these conditions when they didn't exist, to this extent, 50 years ago.
Reply:Make the insurance companies liable for not allowing the doctors to give the diagnosis of cancer to patients in time for their lives to be saved. My Mother died in March 2006 we know she had cancer but the insurance company told the doctor to call it copd and let her die. We never received help from the insurance company the doctors or the hospitals. People are not expendable at age 60 or any age for that matter, just because the insurance companies do not want to pay.
Reply:The answer is quite simple really. I worked at Cedars-Sinai for 10 years (research programmer) and had the opportunity to view the strengths and weaknesses of such human institutions. You find the most brilliant iconoclastic minds with feverish imaginations, you separate them from political pressures, the need to publish papers and let them play. Most importantly, you separate them from the constraints of governmental and bureaucratic rule (like a deserted island?) so that when they stumble across a fertile avenue, you can pump the necessary millions or billions of dollars to build what they envision. Such isolated think tanks have a historical precedent for success (IBM had a rather famous one (Shannon, Information Theory) as did Los Alamos (Feigenbaum, chaos theory)). The solution is not to change the views of the world, but to find those who share your views and focus money where it counts.
Reply:I had thyroid cancer at age 30... Doctors do not check for lumps on the neck too often, I happened to go into urgent care for a bad cold one day and the Dr said I had a lump on my neck. Sure enough it was thyroid cancer. I think it should be doctors priority to check everything looking for signs of cancer.
Reply:Vote for elected officials that are not opposed to using stem cell research and not opposed to ending the costly war in Iraq and other crusades over seas. Vote for elected officials that will redirect those funds toward cancer and other disease cures research.

Vote for bringing P.E. back into the public schools and nutrition education to get people off junk food and cigarettes. Help people to get healthy again and live a healthy lifestyle.

With as much money as this country spends on wars and the war machine and involving this country in every other country's affairs while paying no attention to our own affairs we could probably cure even death itself.

Reply:Unfortunately, the only treatments we have that kill tumor cells, also kill our good cells. The thing that people don't understand is that no cancer is the same. Every tumor that has ever existed and ever will exist has a different genetic code. The error lies in the cell replication cycle. As we get older, its just a matter of time before our DNA replication enzymes make too many mistakes, causing cancer. Things like carcinogens just speed up the whole process. I think more research should be focussed on cancer prevention as opposed to treatment. Perhaps vaccines that will improve the DNA replication process encouraging better cell replication.
Reply:Cindy, we can't even mobilize our governments around the world to feed hungry people, to stop the blatant mistreatment of women, and to simply take the money motivation out of everything we do in life. The crisis du jour has nothing to do with this.

Your brother and many other dead victims from cancer, are a result of there simply being no profit motive for pharmaceutical companies to develop such treatments. These companies make far more money from treating cancer than they would by curing cancer.
Reply:The first thing that needs to happen is to take the monopoly away from the people who have a vested interest in cancer never being cured. IE. The AMA and other support groups who make money off of people having the disease and treating their symptoms.

I have found a doctor that has cured cancer many times but he cannot promote it. He has found that the disease grows in a body that is in an acidic state AND it will not grow in a body that is in an alkaline state. Of course I am over simplifying it here. I can't explain as he would be able to.

But the main problem is that our government makes it illegal for you to promote that you can cure cancer with non-traditional treatments -- even if you can! These restrictions need to end before we as a group will be able to get anywhere.

First you would have to rid the country of pharmaceutical companies. Next create an affordable health care plan for all economic levels to access. Then allow the doctors to treat patients without the influence of the insurance companies. Also you would need to allow natural cures to be considered in treatment for cancer and all other illnesses, in order to do this you would have to limit the financial influence from pharmaceutical companies to the FDA.
Reply:Yes, but cancer is far easier to prevent than to cure. Simply watching your diet every month could decide whether you will get cancer. Cut down on alcoholic beverages and limit the artificial preservatives in processed foods. However some people just get the ill luck of the draw to be born with cancer or develop it at a young age. A cure for cancer in younger people would be a goal to set and attainable. The rest would fall into place.

Reply:To achieve a cure for any disease, we need to take the responsibility for finding the cure out of the hands of the pharmaceutical companies. What does it profit them to find a cure for a disease? If a person is cured, then that person will pay for the cure once and never return for future business. But if a person needs “treatments,” if a person “manages” their disease, then the pharmaceutical company makes a reciprocal income off of that patient. Multiply that by the number of people that have cancer in all of its forms, MS, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, muscular dystrophy, etc…then you have a multi-billion dollar a year industry.

The money that we raise year after year by the Relay for Life, walk-a-thons, Jerry’s Kids, and other various worthwhile organizations must be earmarked for finding the causes and the cures for these diseases…and not merely providing a lifetime of treatment. We must hold the researchers accountable. We must take the responsibility ourselves to find the cures to what ails us.

Reply:I believe that there are already cures to cancer, but the government makes too much money off of the treatments to spill the beans on them...There are other countries that offer treatments, but unfortunately if you use these options in the USA, your insurance will NEVER cover any problems you may have in the future...I also believe that a lot of our problems are caused by technology today, and the *gasp* sins of our fore-fathers...yes, I said it...God forbid...I know I will never be picked as best answer, because all of these things seem to be rigged. Reply:Telling individual stories is one way to share information about the issue. Providing numbers is another. Having family affected also creates an impact. Another method, as we live in a digital age: let people know via the various media outlets - prevention, risk reduction, what cancer can do to people. Celebrities talk about it in the media, in movies, on the news. Celebrities show their vulnerable sides - like how Magic Johnson did with AIDS. Or Michael J Fox with Parkinson. Or Christopher Reeve with spinal cord injuries...or even rock for cancer benefit.. etc..
Reply:Cindy...unfortunately, it's the insurance companies and the pharmaceutical companies that keep us from a real cure for cancer. Think about it...why would a company that manufactures the drugs and implements that are needed for cancer patients even try to create something that would END the monumental income.

I do agree with you on the crisis Du jour...last year it was Hurricane Katrina. that all is because people are just plain stupid...and at the end of the day, they want the rest of us to pay for their stupidity.

If you live in a region that is known to be frequented by hurricanes (and in New Orleans they named a drink after them) then maybe if you've been watching one on TV approaching your home for a week and then were told to evacuate because a hurricane was coming and they are destructive...maybe, just maybe one would think about leaving...but not last year. Actually our schools and research are funded very well, unfortuantely many of the funds are misused by local government and employees. Just do a little research and see that a lot of monies ear marked for just these purposes are showing up in local politicians pockets....as for blaming Bush for everything, one person is never to blame for everything....to you people who automatically point fingers or place blame on one particular person...try looking in the mirror first.

Most of the people living in actual "poverty" in the US are lazy, relying on whatever they can get fro free. Some people are poor but not living in poverty. Some folks are in Poverty and aren't lazy but the get screwed by the lazy guys sucking the desire out of the rest of us to help them.

Reply:Because when the Constitution was written it spelled out the powers and responsibilities of the federal government. One of those responsibilities is to maintain the military.

But schools, povery, and cancer research were not mentioned.

The tenth amendment to the constitution says that any powers not specifically enumerated in the Constitution are STATE issues, and not FEDERAL. Therefore, it is not the government's job to do anything at all about schools, poverty, or cancer. It is the job of the State Government.

The Constitution expressly forbids the federal government from getting involved in funding public schools and cancer research. That funding should come from each individual state.

So if every senior were to attend college today, it would cost just under 48 billion per year. Three years in Iraq: 300 billion dollars. Three years of educating seniors: 144 billion dollars.

Do you ever wonder if the U.S. would have said to Sadaam Hussein, hey, dude, we will give you 50 BILLION dollars to say you are retiring, name a successor of our choosing, install a new government of our choosing, and then disappear, do you think he would have taken the deal? If so, to date there would be 2,500 fewer US lives lost (to include the unfathomable impact on their families and the huge ripple effect that will have on the future), 15,000 US maimed (to include the unfathomable impact on their lives and their families, and not counting people of all other nationalities), AND we'd have enough money to send every American high school senior to college for a year with about a 100 Billion left over.

It's kind of like the end of a Predator or Alien-style movie. Sure they get the bad guy, but in the end, the scoreboard always looks to be in favor of the bad guy.

Because general cancer treatment (chemo) is also used as metastasis treatment. So basically, all cancer research is applicable to metastasis treatment.

But yes, I do believe that more money should be spent on understanding the process of metastasis, since it is usually what ultimately will kill the patient. If we could keep this from happening, it would keep a patient going from the 'curable' stage to the terminal, generalized one.

But this is 'fundamental' research, in which the goal is understanding, and do not generate immediate money. A pharma will definitely not go for this, because it is not a garanteed investment. And pharmas need garanteed investments, since they are public, stock-funded companies, into which average people invest funds in prevision for their retirement. They can't afford to have losses, because those losses can lead to quick bankrupcy.

The sad news is that goverment-funded research tends more and more towards the same attitude. Quick results, do not spend too much time (and money) trying to understand.

But if you are interested in this kind of research you can look up projects on adhesin, and the way we could stop the adhesion of cancer cells on other cells, which is what metastasis is all about. Some progress is made (slowly) on this concept. When it begins to show some good results, you can bet pharma (and government) money will begin to pour in.
